What would happen if in meiosis the cells didnt divide... (1 Viewer)

So say for example the gametes contain the diploid number of 46. When they then combined they would make 92. Say over generations this kept happening. What would be the result? Would the chromosomes stop functioning or would it lead to particular disabilities?

Cells would simply stop functioning the moment the normal chromosome number wasn't matched. It wouldn;t be able to code for the corect polypeptides. It would (likely) never get to the stage where the cell would be quadraploid or eight-ploid or whatever.

Plant cells,however, are a different matter.

think of it this way, a normal human contains 46 chromosomes, that is our cells are diploids. if the sex gamets are diploids, which mean they contain 46, then when they combine, they would make 92. therefore, u can say that since the number of chromosomes exceed the normal amount of chromosomes in a normal organism, the organism would no longer be able to function or grow to be like it's parents. if in the hypothetical case that this abnormal organism with 92 chromosomes do happen to repoduce and the sex gameset are again diploids, when they combine they would make an organism with 184 chromosomes. and so forth. hence, it is necessary for sex gametes to be only haploids so that its daughter cells contain the same amount of chromoes as its parents.

It would never get born.

The host (mother) would detect that there is something significantly wrong (as it does when chromosomes are missing) and would most likely abort/miscarry the bundle of cells.

It's basically an impossible scenario, as people have suggested.

Firstly, gametes are haploid. They contain 23 chromosomes :) A sex cell can NEVER be diploid. If cells didn't divide in Meiosis, then there would be no meiosis? The whole point of meiosis is cell division anyway bro. If cells didn't divide in meiosis
a) Meiosis would lack purpose
b) Assuming your male, your sperm would die, coz they didn't reproduce you wouldn't have future sperm, and you wouldn't be able to ejaculate that sperm to make form a zygote with your girlfriend haha
