There's no international recognition among any unis in Australia. International recognition are unis in the U.S and England.

its a tough call but considering what u have said that u studied business studies from what i have heard UTS is more suited. People say recognised, but in Australia at the end of the day it is the person not the degree, and by the looks of what u have described UTS will help more. If u want recognition/prestige u shouldn't be going to an Australian uni.

Yeah but the lifts in UTS stop at every second floor, that's fucking retarded.

I had this choice to make too. I chose USYD commerce in the end. While the Business course at UTS is very broad, it doesnt go into as much detail and I don't think it would push the student to their limits. I did Business studies too, so it would have been good course I suppose. I've heard its dodgy though, and comparatively "easy". It's up to you though, everyone wants different things from uni/education.

Re: USYD vs UTS. Who's better Need 2 make quick decison

depends on whether you want a specialised degree - i.e. are you 100% sure that you will still enjoy studying commerce? Do you know what the USYD Commerce course has to offer you? Why did you pick commerce for instance would be a good way to start evaluating your decision. If you are quite sure you will enjoy and be stimulated by a purely commerce degree, then USYD is that way to go. If however you are currently unaware of any tertiary study into the field of business, commerce and economics then perhaps you should consider a UTS degree. It's broad foundation does not demand you to lock yourself into a certain major, you are allowed to I guess "sample" what each school has to offer.

This question really all comes down to your experience with commerce as a study and hence the degree to which you are willing to specialise your study. By the way - UTS: Business Major in commerce is more or less equal to USYD: Commerce according to those who teach the course at both universities. It seems highly unreliable coming from a forum so perhaps you would like to ring each university and clarify, goodluck.

hmmmmm.... If you were to study business you would be at the haymarket campus i.e. no lifts, right next to UTS library. So I guess that voids your argument.

Not at all, my argument is that any Uni who can't get lifts right in the largest, most penis like building, is a fucking shit house Uni.

Penis? That's flattery.

Hey all of you. Yes UTS is not the most nicest looking building. But i will have to remind you like the a hell of a lot of other people i know - ....when you go to get employment you're employer really couldn't give a shit about how many little rose gardens the uni had - clearly they're looking at your marks and even more so EXPERIENCE.

I have a cadetship with KPMG and under contract they didnt want us attending USYD - neither did any of the other firms i recieved offers from. Secondly when attending a Melbourne Uni promotional day - they asked us not to compare them to Syd uni for a business / commerce degree but rather to UNSW and UTS. Yes USYD is a nice building - i lived there on campus for a week and they're degree is good. But they're not nearly as flexible as UTS. UTS also provides you with the opportunity to do work experience during the hols at places like Mac Bank. Any future employer will look immediatley at your experience. If you have zero and some other guy has 6 months work at Mac Bank in total and other bits and pieces - if thats the deciding point clearly you have a far lower chance at recieving the job.

It's your choice clearly and the degrees are both good - just don't go to Sydney because its a bloody "Sandstone school". It has no more prestiege than UTS. Its like comparing a selective high school to a private school and immediatley thinking because the private high school is prettier and has more prestiege - its the better one when clearly the selective high school eg: North Syd Girls whips their arse in the HSC.

Just dont be shallow when deciding. (unlike the people above who figure because they're lifts aren't that great it DEFINATELY must have shit house degrees)

All the best

If I were in your position, I would choose USYD. (Coming from UNSW, I am unbiased on this matter)

Who's better? No one can really answer that. As Luiro mentioned, experience and academic results probably play more of a role than your university choice.

we were all on the trains and the one in usyd doing commerce was saying that usyd didnt provide the resources that uts did and was using the stuff my uts friend (doing business (eco)) had to get ahead...

umm y arent u consdering UNSW if u want to do accounting and thinkin of finance?

UTS has a very good accounting school and i have heard much more practical whilst sydney is overly theoretical. Having said that both unis are very good.

UTS n UNSW get a lot more jobs at the big4 firms if u want to move into that

Re: USYD vs UTS. Who's better Need 2 make quick decison

im not sure about usyd, cause im from uts but i know from experience that uts is pretty flexible with the class timetabling (theres many times to choose from), so if u plan to do cadetships or work part-time, then uts could be a option 4u.

anways im from uts so im not sure wats the timetabling like for usyd, so hopefully a usyd student can fill u in there. HTH

when u say cadetship, is it possible to apply for one even after 1st year, or during first year? I was wondering how good UTS is compared to UNSW for finance, is it at par with it as i have heard it is better than USYD for it though

Yes, it is possible to apply for a cadetship for second year (i.e. apply during first year university).

Yeah, what's this about firms specifically not recommending USYD's B. Commerce here? This is beginning to sound very scary man. Do the 'real world' of accounting/financial firms really have something against USYD's Commerce degrees? Do they really much prefer UTS/UNSW's Commerce degrees instead???

Anybody with real experiences in this (job interviews, cadetship interviews, etc) care to comment on these very disturbing allegations?

Quick, because I have to decide as well. Thanks heaps! :)

i always thought the reason you couldnt go to usyd on cadetship was because they didnt offer part-time night classes. uts is popular for accounting cadets because its in a good location, unlike unsw, which is a beyatch to get to after work. even club mac is good because you can concurrently do m.acct and CA.

for business-related degrees, especially accounting majors, it doesnt really matter where you completed your degree because there is always a high demand for accounting grads anyway.

Figures show that USYD has less of its commerce graduates recruited into the Big Four Accounting Firms that UNSW and UTS, though this is biased because UNSW and UTS have cadetship programs(and these figures which were published in BRW showed that UTS only had 8 more students recruited than USYD). I've been told that Deloittes prefer USYD graduates, why this is I don't know
USYD also has a higher median starting salary than UTS for comm grads
all in all I would say that USYD has the more prestigious commerce degree than UTS but you won't be disadvantaged by going to either; pointless to obsess about it too much

The stats from BRW 2003 on recruitment by the Big 4:

UNSW - 57
UTS - 44
USYD - 36
Macq Uni - 18

Yeah, sarevok, about that BRW survey. I've seen it before as well, and it's very misleading. Like you've said, both UNSW and UTS have cadetship programs and Sydney Uni doesn't.

Furthermore, in UTS's case, one should be aware that there are two kinds of accounting students in there, the first being those on scholarship/cadetship B. Accounting ones, and the second, the regular B. Business ones. I remember reading its prospectus that these B. Accounting students get to choose which firms they want to do their cadetships in, and that they had a 100% employment rate for them. So let's assume that most of them choose one of the Big 4 firms, and that all of them were employed by them. There are usually about 30 of B. Accounting students each year in UTS, and that basically has taken up many of those places that was shown in that BRW survey in regards to the number of UTS students employed by the Big 4. Where does that leave those regular B. Business students in regards to Big 4 employment chances then? They would actually then have almost the same chance as Macq Uni B. Com students then (since Macq Uni don't have cadetship programs).

I'm guessing that the same case also applies to those UNSW cadetship students. But do all students there first have to be regular B. Com students and then apply for cadetships, or does it work the same way as UTS? Whichever the way, notice that if we exclude those cadetship students, then regular B. Com students from UNSW employed by the Big 4 would actually then be lower than USYD's B. Com students (since all of those USYD students employed by the Big 4 consists of regular B. Com students)!

So suprisingly, if we're talking about employment opportunities for regular B. Com students (which realistically, most of us are anyways, since usually only the brightest students gets those cadetships in UTS/UNSW), then the ranking is actually something like this:

1. USYD
2. UNSW
3. UTS and Macq Uni

So yeah, I guess what I'm trying to say was just that those BRW stats must be analysed properly before coming to any conclusions with it in which uni offers the greater chance of getting employed by the Big 4 firms.
