Hey, Im a first year student at b applied finance/ b commerce - accounting. I was looking at my units and I dont know which units would best be applicable to my degrees. The units are:

ACCG100 OR ACCG105
ANY 100 LEVEL OF COMP OR ISYS
STAT170 OR STAT171

It Depends...

For example on what subjects you might be considering to take further down the road and what time you're considering on doing them. Looking at the units you'd want to be taking in the future

ACCG 200, ACCG 101, ACCG 201 they all require either ACCG 105 or ACCG 100.
From what Ive heard ACCG 105 is relatively easier than 100, but ACCG 105 is only offered in semester 2 as its more of a general subject for other degrees

So you might want to consider doing ACCG100 in semester 1 and ACCG 101 in semester 2. (entirely up to you but you get a neater timetable)

With the Comp and ISYS, again up to you and what subjects that might require what as a prerequisite
If you like computers and are considering doing some computer subjects as a future elective a lot of COMP units require COMP 115.
Other comp units include ISYS 114 or ISYS 123. ISYS 123 being the easier of those 2.

STAT 170 is easier than STAT 171.

Also a further note, you'll need to do MKTG 101 and BBA102 to qualify for an Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance.

Here is an outdated guide: http://www.efs.mq.edu.au/?a=11170

Btw Im looking at an outdated handbook, so you might wanna check up...on things...

Sorry if Ive confused you more : <
and welcome to Macq.

stat170 is easier than 171.
isys123 is the easiest out of all comp/isys units.

I think i'm going to choose:

ACCG100 (it's easier than ACCG105!)
ISYS123 (cuz it's easy to pass with high marks)
Stat170 (because apparently STAT171 is extremely hard even if u've done 4u maths...)

For my degree i can max out 30cp at 100 level.

I assume you do 4 subs a semester or around 12cp a semester.

So first year ill do:

ACCG 100, ACCG 101, ACST 101, ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 141, STAT 170, and some COMP unit. Obviously break down into the semester in which it is offered.

so that is 24 cp, but i can do 30 at 100 level. Would you then so another 6cp of 100 level units in your second year? or cram 5 subjects into a semester?

ermm my degree doesnt seem very flexible first year with all these CORE subjects.

Affirmative...

MQ's degrees are largely flexible due to self-selected class times, internal transfers, exchange etc. And provided you're not doing an EFS degree, you tend to have a number of electives to play around with as well.

Ouch, even worse haha :)

Bad luck champ, yeah accreditation = structure, beauty of not needing to be 'certified' is that you don't hav eto really follow guidelines :)

Theres no way ACCG100 is easier than ACCG105 but 100 is necessary for accounting degree.

really? how do you quantify that?

accg100 is just pure basic accounting and accounting concepts. you do journal entries, trial balances, profit and loss statements, balance sheets and worksheets.

accg105 includes elements of accounting 1a and also accounting 1b. you touch on all of the above and still need to get examined on cash flows, which is the core topic for accounting 1b.

on top of that, accg 105 or 100 is acceptable for accounting degrees as a pre-requisite for accounting 1b, so it doesnt matter what you do.

conceptually, 105 is more advanced; therefore its harder for people with no accounting basics. a lot of people did 105 because they thought it was a way out of doing 101 (it wasnt) or because they failed accounting 1a.

so rather... there is no way accg105 is easier than accg100.

so... 105 would probably be easier... if you've failed accounting 1a before.

I know a few people that failed 100 and had to do 105 the next semester and found it to be much easier. I heard one of the weekly tute tasks in 105 is to write a letter.

But because i have not done both i personally wouldn't know.

As for 100 being neccesary for accounting degree, well I'd say it is because 105 and 101 are only offered in the second semester meaning you would have to do 105 in first year followed by 101 the next. Unless you could do them at the same time, which i assume would be very upsetting.

yes, like i said - accg105 is easier if you've already taken/failed accg100 before. for the person doing accg105 with no accounting basics, it will 100% be a harder subject than accg100. there are more advanced concepts in 105 than in 100.

and unfortunately, since macquarie's accounting degree is a bit flawed in the sense that the basics taught in 100/105/101 arent really seen in depth again until the difficult accg310, its better for accounting degree students to properly understand how the concepts work etc. before risking a fail in 3rd year (and a lot of people struggle in 310!) Case in point, I still remember students asking the lecturer what depreciation was in accg310.

so in that sense i don't particularly think people should take 105 on the basis of an 'easy letter assessment.'

ps accg101 is now offered in 1st and 2nd semesters. you can take it any time after completing 100 or 105 so either one is okay for an accounting degree.
