This refers to the following polynomial: f(x) = x^3 + 2x^2 + 5x -4

A root lies betwwen 0.5 and 1. Which end of this interval is closer to the root? Explain...

Ok. Basically I know you do one application of the halving the interval method and the end that remains in that new domain is closer to the root.

But how would I explain this in an exam situation? Anyone have any suggestions for something thats clear but to the point?

Thanks in advance.

basically like you said

apply halving the interval, which shows the root is between 0.5 and 0.75, so it lies closer to 0.5

i think that should be clear enough

Ahhh ok Thanks. I also need some practice on the type of questions that say something like explain why another approximation of newtons method is further from teh root etc etc.

Anyone know of any?
