Hey i got 97.35 ( i know its not really high but it might be ok) but i never did UMAT (dont ask why)

anywayz can i enrol in a degree i would be happy doing, such commerce/engineering but concurrently sit UMAT next july and apply to med schools like a HSC student would for admission in 2009. Or is my UAI too low to try??? What UMAT score would i need? Im guessing 200+ (which is very very very very very hard!!!! my mates tell me)

97.35 is a very good score, don't kid yourself. It's above the academic threshold for most unis. For UNSW you'd need ~195 raw UMAT according to this years figures, most other uni's don't officially release scores, but it seems most want >180.

Yes, you can enrol in a degree (any degree) and apply to uni's (UNSW, UWS, UNCLE, UTas, UWA, UMel - of the top of my head), as a non-standard undergraduate. Most unis will only go by your university marks, but some will consider both your uni marks and UAI (UNSW and UMel from memory). Take into consideration most find it tougher to get a high GPA (6.0+ vs. 96+) than it is to get a high UAI and you are applying for less places and unis as a non-standard applicant, so you may want to consider a gap year, as well (although you sound comfortable studying Eng/Com next year, and if medicine never works out - so it may not be an issue).

I think being around places like BoS (and MSO) gives you a really distorted perception of your UAI.

Seriously, 97.35 is awesome. You beat 97.35% of yr 12s. Thats quite an achievment.

And as someone mentioned, UWS and UNCLE both use the minimum uai as a hurdle, so you have as much chance as getting in there than someone who got 100.

There is no way in hell you can get into UMelb....






on account of their last undergrad intake is this year... (and you thought I was being mean ) its turning grad on us

Say you take a gap year you will need minimum UMAT scores of (to get interviews) (your UAI is pretty acceptable for most the universities)

176 for Newcastle
195 for UNSW
180 (I don't know the last cut off) for UWS
167 for UAdelaide
180+ (big fat guess) for UWA
178 for Monash (monash gippsland should be lower)
UTas something high... as they don't interview and don't like interstaters
Griffith... i was waaaaay too lazy to find out


JCU... since your UAI isn't good enough for them to be suckered in by your brilliance, (unless you're rural, indigenous (??) or have some indigenous and rural people to give you excellent references) chances are low... sorry... JCU is like that. The thing to remember is that with JCU the application is absolutely everything, people have been known to get an interview with 87, while rural 99ers have been rejected. Application is everything....

This is if you take a gap year, as soon as you start university, many places won't take you as you have a tertiary record. If you have a tertiary record you limit your choices to

JCU(technically, doesn't actually happen much)
UNSW
Newcastle
Tasmainia
UWA ???
UWS ???

Not that these aren't excellent universities... but you are limiting yourself, on the other hand if it doesn't work out again you can always continue onto grad.

Just don't underestimate the UMAT, I have some brilliant friends who screwed up the UMAT and it screws up your chances faster then you can spit.

Umelb is now postgrad only for 2009 onwards.

184 for UWS but it flucctuates, my neighbour is a UWS med and science fac admin.

You'll have to apply as a non-standard at UNSW, UWS, UNCLE, etc if you start another uni course next year.

You still have a really good chance of making it to UWS/UNCLE. Looking at the files on UWS' site, for last years entry 37% of successful applicants had a UAI of 95-97 (which I'm assuming is 95-97.95 cos the next category is 98-100). Also, if I'm not mistaken (which I might be) only a little over half of those applicants accepted last year were school leavers - a lot of them had finished degrees/started degrees/taken gap years.

Although also keep it in mind that if you're from Greater Western Sydney, you get a hell of an advantage in terms of UMAT required for interview.

i think its getting too far in the past now :|.. im actually like looking at specialist training programs and like intern spots and rego.. ....time feels kinda short.. but its been a long trip

cookie182 what did u get if you don't mind sharing? Personally i did pretty crap so im resitting it next year while doing B Arts and reapplying at UWS, UNCLE, UNSW, etc as a non-standard.

nah mate i didnt sit it, thats the whole problem lol. I know it looks like i obviously arent very passionate about med but my interest grew in the later half of the yr after the UMAT. Plus, i hadnt even heard about the UMAT until i started looking into med seriously. I have always been interested in the human body, diseases and etc but for sum reason never thought i would even be good enough to consider med

plus our career advisor sucked so she never mentioned anything about a test during the yr; i was also jsut super focused on my HSC study

yeah i dun think many careers counsellors were quite ready for medical entry... its not their strong point at most schools

hmm ur obviously very bright but i understand what u mean. Intelligence is one thing, but it takes more then that to be a surgeon. I just finished reading a biography by a surgeon (Making the Cut- Dr Mohamed Khadra) and it details the physical and mental endurance needed. There really is no life beyond the hospital, partically during residency and even when working as a registar. The physical endurance is incredible- he often worked 54 hr shifts!!!!! I work at a club currently behind bar and on the floor, im whinging like crazy on a 10 hr day!


But then again- the feeling of standing above a live human being whose life is dependent upon your skill, your training would be unrivalled in my opinion. Imagine the rush of adrenaline and pride as you turn to the scrub nurse and utter the time-honored cliche- "Scalpel" or "suction" I could thing of nothing better

to be a GP now u need to specialise in it too.. so.. going from surgical to GP would be very difficult.. esp if u missed out on 25 yrs of information for GPs..
they are very different fields.. its lik going from mechanical to electronics engineering.. the basics are the same.. and u might have touched on it.. but god working in it would require retraining..

i dun imagine.. i have completed sumfing lik 75% of all my general surgery training for the bachelors.. ..

its nothing lik tat.. its just repetitive lik trauma center on the wii.. and like i spent lik doing so many similar things...

im more keen in the diagnostic and research challenge type..

5th yr now.. so peds, obs and gyn.. and anaesthetics.. the latter is also a fave
