Hi,

I recently updated my standard Windows Messenger to MSN Messenger 7.0. However, my Windows Messenger sporadically and surreptitiously renders itself online. I have tried the following:

  • Deleting Windows Messenger (access denied)
  • Ticking the "Automatically start Messenger when computer starts."
  • Unticking the above
  • Enabling and disabling, in Program Access and Defaults, access to Windows Messenger.

Any ideas? Or, will I just have to put up with it? (I can log in to MSN Messenger and Appear Offline, but that opens up the temptation to chat.)

Thanks for any help,

pi.

You can stop windows messenger from loading when the computer starts up:

Start/Run/msconfig startup tab untick the msmsgs box.

If for some reason though you do want to delete it (I personally prefer being bale to sign in with two msn accounts eg one with windows msger and one with msn msger) then it is possible however not straightforward. It requires a registry hack that places it on the list on uninstallable windows components. The easiet way probably with an app like shoot the messenger.

It has the method as per the one in the above post, and also one for making it appear in the add/remove programs/

On another note: Addymac, if you want to use more than two accounts at once, just use a polygamy patch. They are included in most of the msn patches avaliable (for this see the Faq as well.
