Quoted from 'Business Studies in action, HSC 3rd edition', Chapman et al:

"A polycentric approach to staffing is one in which personnel from the host country manage the subsidiaries, while the parent company personnel fill the key roles at company headquarters."

"A geocentric approach to staffing means seeking the best people for key jobs throughout the entire organisation, irrespective of nationality."

Ethnocentric:
  • Involves the use of the parent company employees in senior management positions, and 'locals' in middle management and low-level skill positions.
Polycentric:
  • Here the host country nationals are employed. Can be used for top or middle management, as well as for non-managerial staff.
Geocentric:
  • Focuses on employing the best available person, regardless of nationality.
Maccas would be Polycentric, they don't send people over from America to run the stores, when it says 'nationality', it doesn't mean where they've originated from, it means where they live.. Maccas doesn't pay to relocate someone from America to run a Maccas store in Australia, they find someone in Australia to do it.
