Do you have any idea of how many people did 3U maths last year, repeated 3U as well as picked up 4U this year and smashed not only their maths exams but are also going very well in their other exams?
Well I'm obviously not saying it's impossible to do well, but something 'kicked in' for the OP and he ended up with 60% in mathematics extension 1. How much effort then would it require to get an E4 in extension 1, and even moreso in extension 2?

And please tell me, the people who repeated 3U and picked up 4U and so on, what were their marks in 3U the first time round, and how many of these people were there?

lol. I took MX2 up so i didn't have to do much work for the subject that would have counted ie. SOR 1. And, MX2's not that bad if your okay at maths. I was getting 50% in Prelims and i'll probably get an E4 for MX2.
He seems pretty intent on doing all 8 units besides maths, so he'll have to work for all of them regardless.

I think i worded my first post badly. I got 60% in the trials with minimal work throughout the whole year, and between the trials and the HSC I re-learnt basically the whole course. I got nearly all of question 7 out in the exam, all of question 6 etc so pretty sure I will get an E4.

I am going to do as best as I can this year, ie lots of effort in all my subjects from day 1, and I THINK i have a lot of natural ability in maths, and with lots of effort should be able to do Ext 2. I go to a small country school and there is only one other person in year 12 who did extension 1, and that same person is the only other one doing extension 2.

This thread has kind of become pointless now because I figured no matter how much advice/warning you all give me it is my decision, and I have spoken to my maths teacher and our first lesson is next Tuesday :)
Thanks for all the help guys. Oh and for those who think I won't handle it, hopefully I'll come back to this thread this time next year after getting a high E4 for Extension 2 :p

Cheers Tim

I reckon you should give it a try if you have a passion for maths.

Doesn't really matter though cause you can always drop it.

Well, to be honest with 60% in extension 1, it's probably better you just keep the 8 units you have now. Plus doing the 4U course will only count as one extra unit, but will take ALOT of time which is better spent studying your other subjects.
Bullshit. 60% is a fairly decent mark in 3U, especially for this year's exam.

Pick it up son. Initially, what Tommy was saying, my thoughts were "Zomg Extension 2 Mathematics - it takes a genious to do this course. I'll just stick with 3U". Well since picking up 4U, I don't regret it at all. I was doing fairly shit in 3U during Year 11 (averaging 50%), but wanted a challenge in the end. The scaling is very rewarding, and you can look back in 60 years time rocking in a chair and go "Back in the day, I had maths hacks".

The only advice I'd give to you for 4U is DON'T FALL BEHIND and be DEDICATED. Every single day, I arrived late to Extension 2 maths because I either:

1. Cbf.
2. Wanted more sleep.

Lack of dedication will stress you more and work will pile up. Also don't leave topics a few days before the HSC like I did for Mechanics. Time and the question itself will screw you up in the end (like some of the questions in this years paper). Get the concepts early and ask questions!

All the best future 4Uers.

Well you got to be committed to maths thats for sure if you want to do well. At times throughout the year I wavered a bit and yeah that sorta cost me at different times but enough about me :p
THERES NO HARM IN TRYING IT OUT. We started off with like 70 people and that ended up being like 55 or something.

don't do the subject for the scaling.
don't do it cos your friends are there

The trick in 4u and most subjects is get the theory out of the way quickly, consolidate then get into papers. By a few weeks after trials, I consolidated everything and then just started doing paper after paper. Theres no end to papers because as I found in the HSC, you're gonna get some weird questions.

Lol. Don't worry, this isn't a problem. I go to a small country school (500 students roughly) and my extension 2 class will consist of me and only one other person. None of my friends even did extension 1:p

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement guys. I'm keen to do well now :)

Just found this old thread of mine, and thought I would update you all as to how I am going. I ended up with 42 in Ex 1, bit disappointing but I was ranked second, and ended up with a much higher exam mark than assessment mark (ended up with the same overall mark as the girl who was ranked first). I decided to repeat extension 1, but as I was the only one there was zero face to face and i was just sitting assessments.
The other girl doing extension 2 has dropped out, so now I am the only one! I don't mind it, we have almost finished the course (conics to go). Trial this Friday, should be a good indicator how I'm going.
I decided to drop extension 1 due to time constraints with other subjects, and my maths teacher advising me to focus on just doing well in ext 2 instead.

Well thats about it. I'm glad I picked up extension 2 and am not really finding it that difficult. Very rewarding when you do almost a page of working and get the right answer! Not so rewarding when you're wrong :p

Now back to studying!
