i did textiles in yr 9 and 10 and i definitely enjoy the subject and got good marks, however im more concerned with its scaling. where as eng ext and sor scale higher but may be too much for me to handle while taking other content heavy subjects that i chose, and in terms of whether or not im good at english or if i enjoy is a bit blurred because im good at it but i neither hate it or like it, and since i need good yr 11 marks for an early entry into my preferred uni course and/or a high atar (90ish), im conflicted between the two.

@g4mm4 eng ext is only 1 unit but they want to do sor and eng ext together to have enough units

You sort of have to balance the scale a bit: easy subject you enjoy and can ace or a harder subject that might be more enlightening
agree with this part

i wouldn't reccommend taking sor bc you have a lot of other hsie subjects, it doesnt necessarily tie in with the other content.

for eng ext tho there is no specific assignment everyone does with a story on it but to some extent there is a little bit of creative writing in the course. as you would expect ext 1 eng is for english lovers that want to extend themselves and if that is not you don't do eng ext bc it is a lot of work

Oh also isn't there a thing where you need 4 subject areas to be eligible for ATAR?
you do need 4 different subject areas according to uac to be eligible for an atar however that can be a bit misleading and confusing because a lot of subjects count as their own subject area for some stupid reason. for example if you look at my subjects in my signature, it looks like i only have 3 subject areas: english, maths and sciences. however, I actually have english, maths, chemistry and physics. here is a link to check which subject area each subject falls under: https://www.uac.edu.au/assets/documents/hsc-courses/2025-hsc-courses.pdf

in the case of @Thanesha, they don't need to worry about this because they have more than 4 subject areas already and typically your school will let you know if you don't do enough.

When I was choosing subjects for year 11, all my teachers as well as my careers advisor emphasised the importance of having a "fun/creative" subject so you aren't burnt out with lots of writing work.
In my case, I ended up dropping music because it was my lowest scaling subject and I wanted to focus on maths and science instead, but I was glad that music was one of my year 11 subjects even though I didn't end up keeping it.
