I have been absolutely ASTOUNDED by the ABUNDANCE of Young Liberal members on the B-O-S forums.

So naturally I'm going to join up. However to balance that I'm also going to join the Socialist Alliance.
Oh god no, could you try not showering for a year, I think thats their initiation process, as well as being wildly anti-Semitic

Its a pretty mixed bunch but yeh a lot of the gays and and inner city types are defecting to the Greens and we have left the builders, unionists, Italians, Western suburbs types and generally anyone else who would like to tell others what to do with their money after dropping out of school in year 10 and expecting cash from those who put in some effort, but yeh thats pretty much the gist of it.
Corrected.

bshoc, the poorest Australian electorates has always voted and still vote for the Coalition. They're the rural people. The metropolitan poor still vote Labor. The ones leaving them for the Libs are aspirational types who benefit from the economy Keating setup 20 years ago.

BTW, the Greens have barely any gays. I've checked.

No, you will be surprised how many gays the Young Liberals are attracting these days
Yeah it's strange how anti-semitic the more extreme left types are these days. Still the Jewish community (I think) tends to vote Labor mostly, right?

Checked what exactly?

Yes we have Michael Danby, Eric Roozendaal, Martin Pakula, Moss Cass, Mark Dreyfus just to name a few at federal and state level but there is that element drifting towards the Liberals which tends to be the newer, richer South African immigrants.

Wouldn't fit the Jewish stereotype if you know what I mean.

The Greens don't that have many gay supporters. Three types of Gays:

1) Not interested in politics, but votes Liberal in elections
2) self declared small 'l' Liberal voter
3) Left Leaning Pinkos / Queer Activist

They are led by a gay man but can you really tell if they are gay just by looking them? Political parties have to be discreet with revealing candidates sexual orientation due to a whole lot of reasons. The Greens were also along with the Democrats the only party to oppose the same sex marriage ban.

In my experience (as part of the community) thats wrong. Jews live where there are synagogues - generally the eastern subrubs (rose bay, bondi, vaucluse) and the northshore (north sydney, artarmon, up to st ives). These are safe liberal seats. They go for the whole ethos that the liberals carry with them (if its true or not is another thing) of control in the middle-east, strong economic growth, and social conservatism. Although i cant speak for the whole jewish community, this would certainly speak for quite a decent percentage.

Anyway, with the focus of the thread...

How does on go about joining the young liberal party? I have aspirations to do law and go into areas such as diplomacy, politics, etc... in the future, so its something i've been thinking of for a while...but none of my friends or family have ever really joined anything like this so i dont know much about it.

Also i'm going into yr 12, would it be better to join in uni when your the same age as most of the people and are not so busy with hsc? And what precisely do they do at meetings?

The seat of Wentworth is not a safe Liberal seat anymore and I don't know any Jewish people who live in Artarmon but they do lean towards the ALP and only the Orthodox community are the ones who are socially conservative but it would be the same if you look in America and the UK Jews tend to be mostly represented in centre-left parties.

Re: Young Liberal / Young Labour

so which one is the most beneficial to join? which one allows more flexibility (in that you don't have to agree with them all the time) and how do i join the said organisation?

Wentworth is only marginal now due to the boundary redistributions which incorporated the more socially progressive areas of Darlinghurst etc; there is no correlation between this trend and the Jewish community no matter how hard you try to convince yourself of it...

Why don't you go an interview every single Jew living in this country and see if it counts who they vote for noting they make up less than 1% of the country and at or below than 15% of constituents in the seats of Wentworth and Melbourne Ports.

A bit late in the thread, but better late than never.

The best way for young people to get involved in changing Australia for the better is to join groups like Youth First, Young Unity and/or the Young Aus Democrats.

Family First Youth First - www.youthfirst.org.au
Democrat's YADS - http://www.yads.democrats.org.au/phpBB2/
Unity's Young Unity - www.youngunity.org
Liberal's Young Liberals - www.younglibs.org.au (NSW), www.youngliberal.org (Fed)
National's Young Nationals - nsw.nationals.org.au/html/young-nationals.cfm
ALP's NSW Young Labor - www.younglabor.com.au
(no NSW Wild Greens website)
