Shutup!...that's why
Right so a lot of my friends did their HSC this year and a lot of them were happy with what they got. But some of them weren't I'm posting here today to tell you that it's not the end of the world that you didn't get the UAI that you need. There are MANY other options there for you they are listed below. I urge you to read them all even if you think you don't want to do that option or you dont think it applies to you. Please read-
1. Take a different course for a year
My friend did this. she didnt get into the course that she needed to get in to so she thought the same way that a lot of people think. Did you know that if you do a year at uni in one course and get at LEAST a credit average (I suggest you get more) then you can transfer over to a different course a year later. I know it may seem like 'god I have to do an extra year' but really you've already studied for 13, so whats an extra year? When you read further on, including the concluding paragraphs you'll see what I mean.
If you think ' no way I'm not doing that' then there are other options for you, if you dotn want to do them...well then you have no right t complain, becasue if it were your dream to do this you'd do anything to get there.
My friend who did it is actually enjoying her course now and shes doing really well... so instead of transfering courses this year shes going to do the whole degree and change her career...funny how life has a way of sorting itself out
2. Go to a different Campus
This is what I did. You'll find campuses out in the middle of nowhere have lower UAIs, places such as Wagga Wagga, Armidale and Lismore/Coffs Harbour. I didn't get a high enough UAI to be studying anywhere in Sydney so I ended up applying for Coffs Harbour/Lismore and I got in. It was slightly more complicated though because I only just misssed out but becasue I sent them a portfolio and had an interview with them... they were pleased with what they saw. Generally if they have a spot and you're willing to compete for it... you just might get it. You can always change after a year and move campuses/unis.This is also provided that there is a spot for you (i.e. someone may have left) and that you get at least a credit average (again I suggest you do better than that).
Alternitavely you may get the opportunity to study overseas.... think about it.
I actually didn't end up taking it (for those of you who dont know me). Pehaps I shall tell you my story a little later down the track in this blog if it's required.
3. Get a Diploma at TAFE/College etc
Another one of my friends is doing this. Next year he will be going to University now. You see my friend didn't even come close to getting the UAI that was required of him. But he really, really, REALLY wanted this course. Again he was willing to do almost anything to get that course. The University (and most other universities will also), said that they would consider him upon interview and portfolio if he did a diploma at TAFE. So again, it took an extra year out of his life, but now he can do exactly what he wants.
Read more about this in portfolio and interview section...its more detailed
4. Mature-age student entry
To qualify as a mature-age student you need to be at least 21. You can find out more information here about this. So go and work for 3 years, get some experience under your belt. Unlike other Uni students you will have money. So by the time you graduate ou wont be poor and have no experience to show for it. Again one of my friends has chosen this option.
One of my guy friends said that entering as a mature-age student would be a 'waste of life'. It's not a waste of life, it's actually one of the better options becaue you get to experience first hand what it's like in the 'real-world'. Plus if you're lucky enough you may get a traineeship with a company and decide whether this career is really what you wanted or not.
Again, my friend did this and she loves what she was doing. She did 2 things and the first one she decided wasnt for her afterall, imagine studying for 5 years then going out in the workforce only to find that this isnt really what you wanted.
5. Portfolio and Interview
Exactly how I got into Uni. There are always back doors, ring the campus and see if there is a chance for interviewing and getting in via a backdoor becasue there just might be another way for you to get in if they have spots left over.
I didn't end up taking the Uni option becasue I also had an interview with a college who offered University degrees. I didn't want to move out into the counrty, nor did I like the area I would have had to of moved to... although sometimes I wish I had fo moved out of home, I wouldnt have the money or the time to get the money...so I took college.
After college, the degree that I'm doing will allow me to study a masters at university, which is great because thats exactly what I want to do, and get this... the degree that Im doing fast-tracked at college (2 years) would take me 4 years to do an uni, plaus then the masters after that. So instead of 5 yearas at uni I would have the same qualifications in 3 years and I can go out into the workforce.
6. STAT test
Some universities such as UTS don't take stat results but many other universities do. But bewarned the stat test is very hard to understand...I did shit but it didnt matter becaseu I already had a uni offer... I was just trying to get a Sydney campus. But its another option out there fro you and if its gets you even one more booster mark, it can make the difference of getting int a course and not getting into a course.
I want to add mroe to this later but I have to go for now. Hopefully this will help you to realise that it is NOT the end of the world if you don't get the UAI you want. If you have to try just that little bit harder to make your dreams come true, then I assure you that it will be well worth it. Someone wise once told me that- "Dreams only com true to those who chase them"... I believe this to be true. So don't despair, where there's a will there's a way.
Chin up, no frowns and chase your dreams until you get them.
Cheers
