Also, lol, I think they fucked up their example, not sure where they pull out the 1.25 % weighting seeing as its only a 20% discount.
maybe because 80% of 125% = 100%

so going by this someone who pays 1000, will not have effectively paid 1200 (0.2 * 1000 + 1000)

instead, the wole 1.25 thing indictes to me that they are taking that you have paid 80% of it, and they'll cover the other 20%

ie, you pay 800, they'll take it you paid 1.25*800 = 1000, and that works out that u paid 80% and the gov paid 20%

and if iwe apply it to that 1000 example, the take it u paid 1250, which is 50 buks more, so its better for us i suppose

so all in all, yeh they just work it out suhc that whatever yoiu pay will be 80% of what is paid in total by you and the gov. Cause if u simply do 1.2*1000, for example, = 1200 - the percentage u paid is 83.33%

[dunno if u understand me, i'm just rambling :spzz:]

and yeh, ^^^ ur luky ur parents paid for you, i paid from my own money

and you pay by semester, so i doubt you'll need all 8000 at once

Seems weird to differentiate partial up fronts which pay under 80% and take it as 80% as compared to those who pay full up front or 80% and more, and then use the same equation on them, but I'm an Arts student so what'd I know :p

"Hey, son, here's $8000 to pay for your first year Uni fees.
"Thanks guys, but I'd appreciate it if I could spend it on something that I need now, or even invest it for something like a house/car deposit later. Just so you know, the government gives us an interest-free loan which I don't have to pay back until I'm earning enough money not to be worried about it."

damn, u really are against ppl paying upfront arent u

i dunno, if ppl have the money (or if their parents ive it to them - and that is, you have enough money to get a car, and whatever as well) i still think its better to pay it

but it's adjusted to inflation (which is ~ 3% p.a., hence technically not interest free) and you get 20% off if u pay it upfront...

but i suppose if u dont have the money, yeh why not

That's still interest free. Adjusting for inflation just means that the real cost of the degree is constant. Also think that over time salaries will increase, so even though the numbers will be higher, relatively you still owe the same.

Yes. I'm always happy to take out an interest-free loan.
I understand that it's appealing that the loan is interest free and that you don't actually have to repay it until you reach a certain income, but I'd still rather be in my position at the end of my degree than someone who owes $40k to the government.

Not necessarily. Deferring a payment can often be more beneficial, especially here where there's no interest. All I'm saying is people shouldn't bust their balls to pay it upfront just because of the discount.

yeh i agree, but if the money's there, and you are comfortable, would it not be more benefitial to pay, i mean, a 30K double degree like mine would turn into 24K....
