There's one thing that I am really confused about which I want answered .
Say there is 5 people doing a subject which we will call X. The ranks of these people are as follows. A - 1 B - 2, C - 3, D - 4, E - 5.

In the final HSC exam, these people get receive these marks: A - 85, B - 88, C - 91, D - 94, E - 95

Does this mean that the students will receive internal marks of:

A - 95
B - 94
C - 91
D - 88
E - 85

Or is there another system which is used to find out the internal marks of these students?

okay, for a simple example, using the marks that you've given in your example, if the original internal marks of the students are as follows,

the rescaled internal marks would be
A - 95
B - 92
C - 91
D - 90
E - 85

or something to that accord.
