A comprehensive study of the infrastructure project concludes that the cost would be between $25 and $35 billion, of which half will be funded by private industry, for a cost of between $13 billion and $18 billion to the government, depending on factors such as whether Telstra is on board or not.

I don't know that I agree with you Dan. First, it's not an either/or scenario, and secondly there's a huge potential for emergent technology in the internet and its evolution - things like telesurgery are a good example.

There's also the more tangible capacity to greatly improve economic productivity for both private and public industry. It's also a largely 'one-off' infrastructure spend with benefits for all that are permanent.

The Coalition has admitted it won't roll back the NBN next time it achieves office.

But hey, I'm a massive Singularity wank. I don't mind a little government spending to get us there.

If we're talking intangibles, look at the opportunity cost of not spending the $18bn, i.e. massive sacrifices in economic growth. I don't think you understand the potential of 100mbps internet in improving productivity and quality of life.

Not only will hospitals be able to facilitate remote surgery, they will be able to stream full hd video from the bush in order to get expert advice from the city, and they'll be able to develop a database of patient history (one of the biggest obstacles to efficient treatment atm)

And this is just one small area
