For many years the Muslim community in America had been a small minority but today it is one of the fastest growing religions in the country. Muslims first came to America in the 1860's from Syria and Lebanon. Today it is estimated that there are between 6 to 7 million Muslims in America, roughly 2% of the entire population.

One of the most active recruiting grounds for Islam in the USA is in university campuses where many groups have well funded and organised student programs

There are large communities of Muslims in almost every large city. Ethnically diverse, the largest community of Muslims come from South Asia (33%) followed by African-Americans (30%). Arab Muslims make up 25% of the Muslim population. While Islam is rapidly growing in every ethnic class, the highest number of Muslim converts are from the African-American community (64%). The second highest number of converts are white Americans (27%).
28% of muslims in america are converts.

Thoughts?
Is this seen as a threat, ie muslims wanting to take over the world, or just people trying to find peace in this religion?

The high rates of conversion among the African American community could be explained by the fact that people generally turn to religion when they live in poorer situations. African Americans are the poorest group in the US. On a global scale the most religious countries are backward in every area a country can be judged in. Conversely the most atheist/agnostic/irreligious countries are the most stable, developed and highly educated.

Turkey's relatively religious (Islamic country. No questions here?) and isn't the worst off country in the world.

Brazil's relatively religious too (80%+ I think?), and getting better in many areas.

China's got an atheist population of about 60% or so, and some of what it does is considered backward or inhumane (eg, executions, they still have a lot of poor people, etc)

Just saying.

To assume all the african americans that convert to islam are poor, isnt entirely correct.
And even if they did, they are converting to a specific religion. Why arent they converting/reverting to christianity? Etc etc.
The same applies to the 27% of converts that are american white.

Turkey is a secular country not Islamic but like 90% of the population are Muslim.

The countries with religion in their government tend to be more shit.
