Is conduction band a valence shell or is it just a theoretical 'band' that is said to be the path for free electrons to roam around the lattice?

Conduction band in a SC is an energy band which comes from the atomic valence shell. It is completely empty when temperature = 0.

All you need to know for HSC is that energy of electrons in conduction band > energy of electrons in valence band and the greater the amount of electrons in the conduction band, the greater the conductivity of the material.
