So I need to take one of these next semester... or so. Any thoughts?

Apparently 1917 does not need any prior experience in computing.... but is worth 2 courses and is very difficult.

there are many wam boosting subjects at uni

you gotta find a balance of usefulness and wam, since boosting your wam has diminishing returns

shadow your not a dumbass, i think you can still sustain deans list despite doing 1917

well it depends on the lecturer who takes it. 1911 is easy stuff but 1917 is pretty much able to learn pretty much all syntax of C. 1911 is half of it, and other half next semester.

Hmm, yeah you mentioned something like that. Or Lolsmith.

I don't have to do 1921 though, but in the course requirements 1911 is compulsory. But mitchy I think wants to do 1917 last I heard and he wanted me to tag along. So I'm not really sure...

COMP1911 is confirmed WAM booster.
This is not necessarily true. I found it enjoyable (mostly due to good lecturers) but quite a lot of students find COMP1911 really difficult. They do it because they have to.

Don't do COMP1917 unless if you have to. I've had friends do it and say that it is really, really hard.

although 1917 is like crazy hard, and requires alot of effort. Eh no lecturer listed for next semester 1st for 1917 but its usually someone really good. 2nd semester is blair who is top notch.

Dont know about lambert for 1911. If someone like morrey (head of school) takes 1917 should it then, because from what i have heard, he is the best lecturer in CSE.

COMP1911 is already pretty useful in itself, particularly for those with no programming background. Unless you plan on majoring in computer science, there isn't much added benefit in doing COMP1917 over COMP1911. You could always teach yourself the rest of C once you know the basics.

comp1917 teaches you everything about C, also there is plenty of use of besides comp sci kids. For maths kids its recommended you can program or your pretty screwed.

Tim Lambert will be the lecturer for COMP1917 12s1. I'm not sure who will be taking COMP1911, but there's a good chance that it will be Angela Finlayson again.

I won't speak for the difficulty of COMP1917 against COMP1911, but I will say that COMP1917 is undoubtedly the more interesting course.

Neither of them are really supposed to be about just learning C, but rather an introduction into the thinking patterns necessary to work with computers. For practical purposes, this much more prominent in COMP1917, and so, COMP1911 is a much more mechanical treatment of the subject in general.

I would suggest that if you have any inclination at all to do COMP1917, you enrol in the higher course, as it's a simple matter to drop down to the lower one if you find it too difficult for you.

+1, especially in the thinking patterns.

Keep in mind that if you want to do more Computing electives later in your degree, COMP1917 will be more useful (and a shorter path).

I'm doing Adv Maths majoring in Applied Maths. I'm going to be taking Mathematical Computing this semester and Computing for Finance in 3rd/4th year. Would you recommend I do COMP1911 or 1917?
