So I'm entering year 11 next year
These are my subjects
Standard Eng
General Math
Studies of religion 2 unit
legal studies
business studies
biology

*Someone, accidental error in the title

I was told, that even if I do really well in these subjects it will be really hard for me to achieve an atar of 85+ because of how poorly they are scaled

No, that it is completely wrong. I don't know what else I can add here, but you have been seriously misled.

High marks overall. Advanced isn't a prerequisite, but keep in mind you'll almost need to be first in Standard to avoid the poor aligning.

As long as you are confident reading and interpreting, the level of English you do has no bearing on Law.

Ok, thanks for the help. I know I'll ace these subjects as I have come first in Average math (there are three levels, I was in the middle) throughout year 10, aced bio topics in science, top of Commerce (leads to legal and business) and I was in the top 5 with RE, I like the whole structure of law and I love studying it so I think that would be a goal.

Just stating the above to show this just wasn't a random pick of subjects, LOL.

If you're topping 10.2 maths in your school, you should seriously do Advanced Mathematics because it seems like you are capable of that.
Try to avoid Standard English if you can, doing Advanced English is more beneficial in the end. You can always drop down to Standard if you can't handle Advanced!

Thanks for you're input. The thing is about maths, If I can ace General Maths then I don't really see the problem because I don't see my future being involved in maths too much lol. I'm more interested in a business/law degree. Subject selections are finalised now, I should've thought of that, thanks anyway dude! :)

You shouldn't do advanced math for your future, but if you go well you have a better chance of getting a higher mark, resulting in a higher ATAR which is needed for law. Also the difference in content in advanced eng and standard isn't massive so you should give advanced a go and drop down if it's too much.

You can get any ATAR with almost any combination of subjects. With your subject mix, you should be able to get pretty much any ATAR, although you would probably struggle to get say 99.5+. Standard english could hurt you due to its poor aligning. Also, HSC english is near useless for law.

You have the first 3 or 4 weeks of Year 11 to change your subjects so yeah....
