Hello guys, I've been reading up on this quite a lot recently.

I've just hit year 11 this year and trying to focus on study to achieve the course I really want to get in.
I'm not ranked quite well within school right now (maybe top 20%-ish) and my school is currently ranked in the top 20.
CONSIDERING I achieve band 6 throughout all my HSC examination, what kind of ranking would I need to achieve within school to get a flat ATAR of 99+?
Do you need to be at least in the top 10 students for every subject you're going to be taking to receive 99+?

Thanks for your input..!

Probably top ten in all the high scaling subjects at a top 20 school. Just to be safe I'd say top 5 in everything except top 10 in English.

It would depend on how many people normally get 99+ at your school. At a top 20 school, I'd expect ATLEAST 20 people get 99+ assume it's a large cohort (100+).

Aim to be in the top 15-20 or so for large subjects (80+ students) and top 10 for average subjects (40-80 students) and top 5 for small subjects (under 40 students).

Aim for top 15 for English and MX1.
Aim for top 30 for MX2 (due to scaling)
Aim for top 10 for Physics and Chemistry.

If you went to my high school (in the 40's rank now lol) and did the HSC in 2011, you'd need around these ranks for a 99+:
English: top 40
MX1: top 5
MX2: top 5
Physics: top 5
Chem: top 5

Realistically, get mid-Band 6 for MX1, MX2, Physics and Chem, and a mid-high Band 5 for English, and you should hit 99.

Sure ranks are important, but it's your overall performance in the HSC which is paramount to ensure you get a 99 ATAR.

You don't need such a high mark in MX2 but try and get a high mark in MX1 since it's not too hard.

High E3 for MX2: 86+
Low-mid E4 in MX1: 93+
Low-mid Band 6 for Physics and Chemistry - 93-94
High band 5 in English - 88+

That should get you roughly 99.00 ATAR.

90+ HSC exam mark for MX2 is quite achievable, so why not capitalize on your potential on a higher mark? And seeing as 95 is around 100/120, if you're going to do well in Physics and Chem, and even MX1, I'm sure you'd be capable of a high mark. And after that, things like bonus points (not really important if you're going to get 99 anyway) or special student programs do look at your performance, not only your Band, but even a combination of marks.
