thanks xx

You still have to sit the UMAT and instead of the your ATAR, the undergrad uni's will generally use your GPA or GPA/ATAR mix for the academic threshold. However some uni's wont allow you to apply for their undergrad degrees if you have any tertiary record. Just look up their eligibility criteria.

Yeah, jbobs is correct.

You are definitely eligible to apply as a nonstandard to a number of medical schools in Australia. The majority will consider your GPA and will disregard your ATAR, e.g. UWS, JMP, JCU etc. Other's may used a combined GPA/ATAR/NRSL rank e.g. UNSW.

However, it is also important to note - once you have started your tertiary degree, you will not be able to apply for some medical schools in Australia as they only accept standard applicants. E.g. Monash, UQ, Griffith, UAdel.

You will have to sit the UMAT this year to qualify for entry as a nonstandard.

UWS disregarded my GPA and took my ATAR and the new info on their website leads me to believe they're not counting GPAs/WAMs for incomplete degrees (unless you're in first year Advanced Science and you get a GPA above 5.5 and get one of the 6 highest UMAT scores out of everyone below the GWS cutoff in adv sc at UWS (you would probably have to get over the cutoff though)).

It's a strange situation.
Just get a good ATAR!!

You can't ~transfer~ but you can get in and start from the beginning with none of your previous studies counting.
I understand that when i 'transfer' im starting from the beginning :)
but im curious, can i do this like in my second year of uni IN MY FIRST COURSE. because what if i fail UMAT first year etc.
can i transfer into med in my second year (Saying my course is 3yrs)

you won't be transferring.
By the time you finish med your prior uni will not let you go back and finish your previous degree and since no units are counting it isn't a ~transfer~ it is you entering another separate course and yes you're obvi allowed to do that, there are at least two people in this thread doing that this year.

you can do it in first year, second, third, fourth, fifth, after you finish your degree, etc. as long as its within like 10 years of completing your degree (or as long as you're still in a degree).

It's like any other course swap except harder.

haha, i meant completely start a new course, throwing away my first course... if you get me :S

my overall question is if can i transfer whenever, or is there a deadline that i might have to try for postgrad med? :)

you will have to ask them directly then because the new info on their site does not mention a first year GPA anymore just an ATAR and completed degree GPAs.

yes, that is what it is. It isn't transferring and yes, you can do it WHENEVER. For med it just has to be at the start of a new year or whatevs. Other degrees you are sometimes able to start second sem. Not med. not nursing either iirc.

Nope.
You can have finished a degree, not finished, whatevs!1!1!2 and you're fine to change or start after you finish and have both degrees on your record.

year 12 --> Did shit in UMAT. Got an ATAR 4 points below predicted. Still just good enough for med at UWS.
Uni --> went for USyd MedSc/Engg. Hated it. Loved the uni. Family member died. Did average in first sem. Did slightly better in UMAT. Knew I would get an offer for a UWS interview. Didn't give two shits about uni because I knew they would count my ATAR anyways. Got the interview. Did shit. Did shit in uni. Got in anyways. #yolo

2011 - UMAT of 50th percentile, ATAR of 98.75 -> no Medicine due to poor UMAT score and did not apply to non-UMAT schools, namely JCU.

2012 - Entered into Advanced Science at UWS, achieved a GPA of 6.875 (surpassing the required 5.5 threshold), retook the UMAT and scored a extremely borderline score of 144 weighted (80th percentile). Luckily received an interview place at UWS due to the fact that I was an Advanced Sci student and thus had a lower UMAT requirement. Felt good about my performance in the interview and thankfully received an unbonded, main round place at UWS.
Oh - also received an UNCLE/JMP interview invitation based off my UMAT scores: 61/53/60 - didn't feel confident after that.. but it didn't matter.

But yeah, basically, if your goal is Med -
Do the UMAT each of the years of your Undergraduate degree (if worst comes to worst)
Do the GAMSAT the penultimate year of your degree (year 2 for nursing as it's a 3 yr course) and the final year of your degree.

So 3 x UMAT, 2 x GAMSAT.
That will maximise your chances of getting in both undergraduate and postgraduate schools.
