"HOURS before the Bali Nine duo were shot dead, another young Australian man came a step closer to facing execution overseas.
Sydney man Peter Gardner, 25, has had his death penalty case in a Chinese courtroom brought forward by almost six months and will go on trial in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou next Thursday, May 7, for allegedly attempting to export 30kg of methamphetamine, or ice.

Gardner’s lawyer, New Zealand barrister Craig Tuck, said the reasons for the fast-tracked trial were unknown."

China usually commutes death sentences to life imprisonment if the prisoner displays good behaviour in prison for two years. So what happened in Indonesia likely wouldn't happen there.

If that's the case, then it's actually a good step forward for China in terms of the death penalty - less people will get executed and death sentences will get turned into life sentences (provided they have good behavior).

As far as I know about the death penalty in the mainland, within the last few years they've canned the death penalty for many offences including that of corruption.

Edit:

Quote from wiki:

PRC authorities have recently been pursuing measures to reduce the official number of crimes punishable by death, and limit how often the death penalty is officially utilized. In 2011, the National People's Congress Standing Committee adopted an amendment to reduce the number of capital crimes from 68 to 55.[8] Later the same year, the Supreme People's Court ordered lower courts to suspend death sentences for two years and to "ensure that it only applies to a very small minority of criminals committing extremely serious crimes.
Welp, guess this might be a better situation than Indonesia or Singapore now.
