can you usually just put router and modem as the same thing or do u have to make them 2 different devices

The textbook demonstrates a specific method of drawing the router and switch, which is good to demonstrate knowledge, but not necessary. Same with bridge's and gateways.

Hey, this isnt actually true . There are no international standards for drawing network diagrams/maps. If you would like a reference, CISCO has some good diagrams (that are almost industry standards - only because they are used so much).
