Yo so as the title suggests I bombed english adv rlly bad which the task was worth 30%. The cohort is extremely competitive having multiple people who have gotten full marks for both sections so I was wondering if I should drop to standard?

However, I know what I did wrong and am super prepared to fix it and ik i can easily pull my rank up however I just want to know if dropping to std is the better option

Any Advice is much appreciated :)

How many more assessments do you have? For us, we already did 1 (worth 20%) and 2 more 20% each, and one trials 30-40%.

If its similar for you, you need to do a lot of work to bump up your mark, especially trials. Otherwise, drop it, not worth getting low band 5s and 4s overall.

lowk i feel like dropping to standard is typically not the best option

afaik doing well in standard is so much harder than doing well in adv.. and like if u think u are able to come back i think thats more worth

like if you check uac's scaling report it legit says in 2024 1% of the std cohort got a b6, and 15% of the adv cohort did

like thats actually insane if u ask me

i dont think so, theres still 3 more assessment tasks to pull your rank back up, and then theres externals as well
in the grand scheme of things i dont think 30% weighting is that significant as long as you actually do do better in the next tasks

you should stay. It's only the first assessment, and it sounds like you have a strong cohort. If you can bring your rank up, you will be ok; there are still 3 more assessments - trials can change a lot and could be worth up to 40%. Does your school give you a handbook that shows how much your future assessments are weighted? It could be a guide on what to really focus on.

DO NOT drop to standard. Standard scales terribly and you'll be bored without the challenge of learning at an advanced level. It's only your first task. I say, wait until your second assessment and see how u go. If you cant get above a certain mark e.g. 80%, consider talking to ur teacher or dropping.

id would only drop to standard in ur situation if u got a really bad mark in adv like 30% or something and you dont see urself improving. its really really hard to b6 in std. ranking poorly shouldnt be too much of a big deal if ur in a good cohort, and you can def climb up the ranks

standard aligns horrible therefore if u get a 55 in that ur likely stuck with a 60, which is a very low band 3.

if the reason you bombed the assessment is genuinely clear to you and you believe you can fix it, there is no good reason to drop to standard. the subject scales like absolute garbage and you are better off performing slightly better than average in advanced than doing comparatively well in standard.

ur fcked if u take standard
that isn’t exactly true. You need to talk to three of my standard English students who went straight to university and are studying medicine . I’ve marked many top rank marking Standard English . It doesn’t necessarily handicap a student a lot pending the other subject choices

@jimmysmith560 rlly need ur help here 🙏
30% weighting is significant and unfavourable performance will have a negative effect on your overall position. However, this does not mean that improvement and recovery beyond this point are not possible, especially since there is 70% worth of your internal mark yet to be determined. You should focus on improving your performance in future tasks as much as possible. This applies regardless of whether you choose to keep English Advanced or drop to English Standard.

so hypothetically is it possible to end up with a band 6 in the end despite this failure?
