Any rural besties out here. Oml I need to rant.
So here's the sitch....
So like I attend an independent school in a regional area but it's not like attending an independent school in greater sydney. For one, many people here are less academically inclined (I'm not saying that's a bad thing - everyone is on their own journey but I'm trying to get into med so like rankings are going to screw me over unless I literally get rank 1 in every subject) with a lot of people wanting to go into trades, farming or low ATAR threshold degrees, which is fine except that I feel that I don't really have much support amongst my peers. Furthermore, there is a teacher shortage at my school and is detrimentally affecting my studies along with my troubled home life (tmi soz).

The other thing is that I have lived rurally since mid 2021 (year 8) which makes me ineligible for the rural admission scheme which is now even worse since my dream school UNSW Med at Wagga Wagga I can't even apply to now since it's now exclusively for rural students in preclinical years which is extremely disheartening since I have seen first hand the extreme medical shortages in rural areas and I really do love living in a rural area and would have no problem staying in a rural area for the rest of my life but I know since I would most likely have to attend med school in a city (which considering that an ATAR of 90 makes the local newspaper in my area - as in I need high 99's since I have to apply through the regular scheme so wtf :/ ). Studying in Sydney (where I'm originally from) would most likely mean that I would probably stay in Sydney permanently since the 5-7 years of school would most likely mean me reestablishing connections in the city and starting well into my life and that moving back rurally postgrad would cause instability.

And I'm not here trying to make excuses but I am really scared as I don't even know anymore where I will be living past HSC exams let alone where/what I will be studying. I have been studying as much as I can but my home life has impacted me greatly and is taking up all my mental capacity to memorise/learn content.

I could do unsw med gateway but idk if that's a risk or not since there is only like 10 spots so should I just risk it with general application and hope EAS can get me into a selection rank of high 90s (assuming I get around 97/98 which last time someone in the area got even remotely close to that was in 2013). Can I apply for both ways?

I'm sorry, this sounds like a really difficult situation but I'm not a rural student so I can't help you much

Have you considered applying for med schools other than UNSW? There are plenty with lower ATAR requirements like WSU, and if you're willing to study in more regional areas or nearby states you could try Charles Sturt or even Queensland Uni, James Cook, etc (QLD has a lot of medical schools). Seeing as you're interested in regional med, those could be good options. Have you registered for the UCAT yet? Also, you could try postgraduate entry too, if you're super bent on doing med.

I'm definitely not an expert though, as I'm not really considering med, so take all this with a grain of salt. I wish you luck, and med is hard to get into for everyone so don't feel too bad
