hey guys, i’m in year 11 and currently doing advanced maths. for the first assessment (algebra + intro to functions) i got 70%, but for the second one (further functions + trig) i got 19/40, which was below average. my teacher has been really pushing me to drop and even said she’s going to call my parents. i just got a tutor and i feel like i could improve if i put in the effort, but i’m also scared it’s going to hurt my atar if i keep struggling.

in my class we started with 19 people and now we’re down to 13 because my teacher is so pushy about getting people to drop — and honestly i feel like i’m her next target. it’s making me doubt myself even more.

right now i just don’t get trig identities and simplifying those expressions — it all feels like a blur and nothing’s clicking. i’m not sure if i should stick it out for one more topic or just drop now before year 12 content starts. has anyone been through this? any advice would mean a lot. thank you 🙏

???? Why do people NEED to drop, anyway? Can't outliers also come from the bottom, anyway?

I guess six people aren't really an outlier but like, imagine if the only people allowed to be in a class were the ones who scored in the top 5 in the first or something 😭😭😭

It's not like people are even being dragged down because like, it's a third of the class 😭😭💔
Like no shit the first and second or whatever people will be dragged down because everyone else did worse than them??? Like that's literally how it works??? If there were people better than them they wouldn't be at the top 😭😭

Ok crazy rant but idfk what Ur teacher is on

First decide on why you want to do advanced math. Are you going to do STEM at uni ? If the answer is yes, stick to advanced math. Otherwise it may be better to do standard math and get a good mark.

yup better to do standard, really advanced is only useful for scaling if u plan on getting 95 hsc mark

Nah stick through it, you are still in year 11 so nothing counts towards your atar, it's really just a trial run to see what you like or don't like. I would say if you see yourself putting in genuine effort into this subject then keep it, if you don't see yourself putting any effort and improving maybe consider dropping. HOWEVER, whatever it may be, I'd suggest to just stay rn, imo its a bit early and also i guarantee u there are definitely A LOT of people who were really bad in year 11 maths advanced and locked in for year 12 and ended up with really high ranks. Just put the effort in and you will see the results

I think you'll be fine.

I have gone through the same thing, persevered through and I am now doing extension 2 mathematics and have a pretty solid rank, so everything is fine. I had pretty bad marks for the first term. I scored 56%. I persevered and I got an 88% in prelims and ranked top three. It's totally doable. You have plenty of time and opportunity to improve.

From my experience, the most important part is your mental health. I personally struggled when I had this experience and a teacher told me to drop and kept pushing me down. If you feel like it's affecting you mentally, it's best to reconsider and chat to someone. Nothing's worth your mental health, you need as little stress as possible throughout these challenging years.

Always remember that you are capable! Best of luck :)

This is quite a good YouTube video on trigonometric identities:

Additionally, this short YouTube video explains why sin2θ = 2sinθcosθ :

To better understand and remember odd and even functions
ie. sin(-θ) = -sinθ and tan(-θ) = -tanθ, so are odd functions, as are cosec and cot functions,
whilst cos(-θ) = cosθ, so is an even function, as is the sec function,
visualise the sine, cosine and tan graphs (click on attached thumbnail), and note that only the cosine graph is symmetrical about x=0 (ie. y axis) and sec is its inverse, which is why these two functions are even.

PS: Unless students were disrupting her class, your teacher has a terrible attitude. You have every right to learn advance maths.

my teacher also pressured me to drop too, even calling me at the end of class to talk about my HORRENDOUS drop in marks as i progressed later on in the class. i've always had a negative view on her for multiple factors, but honestly thinking about it now she was just trying to be serious to students about where they're headed with their hsc / atar results.

i personally did not have the motivation to get a tutor and study in my free time (especially since i had other classes to prioritize like multimedia), and i got like 19% on my preliminary, so i chose to drop down to standard 2 and i got a band 5 in the end.

if having a bit more relaxed HSC experience + more time to focus on other subjects sounds great to you, i'd highly recommend dropping down. but if you are willing to risk it and lock in, stick with maths advanced.

thats my 2 cents hope that helps :hammer:

ughhh ikkkk she makes it a routinely thing every lesson to say "if you dont get/understand this, then this course is not for you" im so done i need an unbiased person bc i want a 90-95 atar and i want to know if its achievable by doing standard.. idk i feel like i can do it, its just right now im finding the content very challenging, idk if its js bc of my teachers pace but i find the whole trig graphs and radians very confusing.. i feel like i js dont get the concept... hellpppp 😭😭
