    Aeronautical/Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering

1/ With the decline of the manufacturing industry in Australia, your long term job prospects might not be so good in mechanical. Just today, Ford announced it will shutter an engine plant in Victoria, probably putting a few dozen mechanical engineers out of work. Aeronautical isn't very strong...

    Peoples opinions on Engineering

Mechatronics is a "new generation" branch of engineering, which is fashionable but still young in Australia. I think it leaves the door open to other engineering disciplines. But a traditional engineering degree would be more highly regarded if you were applying for an electrical or computer...

    postgrad med

I'm not confusing anything. I have no problem with international students who study medicine in Australia. Unless they somehow cheated in the GAMSAT, they are pretty much guaranteed to have excellent English skills (better than mine, at least). Like I said before, the GAMSAT is damn hard...

    postgrad med

Yeah, they take the same English "competency" test as international fee paying students - meaning, ther English skills are often rudimentary.

    postgrad med

From what I've seen of GAMSAT practice questions, it is really hard.. Especially the paragraph items, because the timing is so brief. I doubt I would have gotten much above 50% correct. Judging by their English skills, I can say that most of our foreign trained doctors would flunk it too. There...

What is everyones thoughts on the ADF's sponsored undergraduate scheme?

Maybe it runs smoother in NSW. Here in Brisbane, I estimate that I spent a total of 2 hours (maximum) doing testing/listening, and a full 5 hours sitting in the lobby - staring blankly at the furniture and occasionally making small talk with other applicants (one girl was a medical student...

Lobbyists bemoan fall in uni science enrolments

The typical "skills shortage" mantra, but no mention of the shocking unemployment rate for science graduates. They don't seem to understand that students are avoiding the sciences for a reason. Why do they want to increase supply without demand? On the front page of the Australian...

    Peoples opinions on Engineering

Based on longer term career prospects I would choose: 1/ Civil engineering 2/ Mining engineering 3/ Chemical engineering 4/ Electrical engineering 5/ Mechanical engineering 6/ Aerospace engineering Don't get swept up by the hyperbole about six figure salaries. But at least grads get...

    Should i do Medical Science?

Most medical science courses are vocationally oriented and prepare graduates for careers as medical scientists in the health system. Very few of them become lowly "lab techs", compared to other science majors. The base salary for medical scientist is about as much as a registered nurse in most...

    Journalism

Entry to journalism @ QUT is fairly competitive - UAI 92 is required most years. They have their own news segment which I watch some nights on the Bris31 channel. The presenters are all very good looking - an indictment on the industry, I guess.

How to repair the damage of failing 6 subjects in 1.5 years

If you were studying engineering or something, I'd advise you to stick with it regardless, and graduate. But as a commerce student, employers will especially look at your GPA, and those failed subjects will hurt your prospects. Employers can cherry pick commerce graduates, and your GPA will mark...

    Mining or Petroleum engineering

It costs more to train a mining engineer than a commerce grad. Most of the "technology" universities are busy cashing in on boutique courses and the international student scam.

    Science

I wouldn't study physics for the career prospects either. A 4% unemployment for any PhD demographic is not so good, compared to the national unemployment rate. We also don't know how many of the other 96% are stacking shelves at a supermarket, or doing low level lab technician work.

What is everyones thoughts on the ADF's sponsored undergraduate scheme?

I thought about joining the ADF as a sponsored undergrad (radiography). I called their info line, and the telemarketers couldn't tell me anything useful, but they conned me into booking an assessment day. I went to their assessment day. Took a day off uni and spent about 7 hours sitting around...

    Science

The unemployment stats for biotech were better in previous years - "only" 17.4% in 2002 and 7% in 2001.

    Science

The 'shortage' is of elite scientific researchers, not of plain vanilla science graduates. Unemployment is also a problem at the masters and doctorate level. Just talk to some Ph.D candidates at your local university to get an idea. Rather than just adding to the excess labour pool, the...

    Universities ripping overseas students off

I don't think many internationals are paying for the education, anyway. They've paying for the permanent residency. That's the global "niche" for Australian "education".

Are there too many Internationals at UNI these days?

I think that a million university students is enough. If that means denying a taxpayer funded degree to the most unprepared or uncommited, then so be it. During the 1970s/1980s there were far less students, but each student was better supported, and students had better prospects when they...

Are there too many Internationals at UNI these days?

Lets be realistic. We get poor quality internationals, but they're no worse than the standard of Aussie student at many universities. At least the Chinese and Indians have an excuse for mediocrity - poor English skills. Uni student numbers have inflated massively in recent decades - degrees...

Do You Think You'll Do A Postgraduate Degree?

I'm thinking of doing postgrad echocardiography, or some other professional development course which becomes available. I'm definitely not going to return to uni fulltime.
