    Actuary - Job Prospects

Well, most financial services jobs are in Sydney. There are a few actuarial consulting firms in Melbourne and a few large insurers. They give preference to Melb uni students (I think) and if your top 10-15 ish (for ppl who wanna get an actuarial job, i.e. not IB or Management Consulting) in your...

Advice on getting course-related summer work experience/internship?

I live in Syd, so don't know much about the firms in Perth. Look around and do some research, I'm sure a lot of small firms will be more than happy to take on a extra hand (for free that is, lol) for the summer.

Advice on getting course-related summer work experience/internship?

how about trying to approach some small firms directly for unpaid work? Any kind of experience this summer will go a long way to secure vacation employment in your penultimate year.

    Difficulty of Actuarial Studies

Part 1: 3 years (if you get all your exemptions first time round), Part 2: 1 year, Part 3: 2 years + (depends on individual). So, all up, your looking at 6 years minimum (some people do it in 5 years) in order to become a fully qualified actuary.

    Actuarial Consulting

Just wanted to get the opinions of others with regard to actuarial consulting firms (i.e. Big 4 and the independent ones). What are the pros and cons of each? Salary? Culture? Work? etc.

    ACtuarial basketball competition

Its more the fact that UNSW actuaries are boring in general and no one wants to play, maquarie actuaries are a much more tighter group and they bring a lot of imports from other degrees as well. I remember at the indoor soccer comp there was some awesome maq players (seriously doubt they were...

    The hoo-hah surrounding investment banking

I was a bit surprised to hear how much risk management grads get paid at IB firms. For example, I got a friend who had a offer for Deutsche Bank Risk Management with 80 K grad salary (which she knocked back). Then again, I guess they work pretty long hours as well.

How hard is getting distinctions in B Comm?

It really depends on the individual. You gotta figure out what works for you. I know people who study their ass off and get credits and then i know people who study squat and get HDs. But in general, most of the commerce courses are pretty straightforward if u do the work (apart from...

    Actuarial Studies advice

You could always just do the actuarial maths and see from there if u like it or not. MATH1151 replaces QMA (ECON????). If you decide not to do an actuarial major they wont make u do QMA (as MATH1151 is sufficient). Btw, Chinese + Actuarial Studies = good money, lol

    The hoo-hah surrounding investment banking

Some IB firms, I have been told, have a strict policy on only considering those with double degrees / honours students (degree is not overly important, but they look for experience). Law/comm students thus have better chance than plain commerce students. Either way, you still have to be a...

Actuarial Studies - Part 2 Accreditation

I was just wondering if it is possible to complete part 2 while working? I was going through the institute website and there aren't any external examinations for Part 2, only university accreditated courses. So, does anyone know if the lectures/tutorials for these courses are held during...

    (urgent) Actuarial Studies Questions

To undertake actuarial studies at UNSW you only have to satisfy the B Commerce UAI cutoff, while at Maq Uni, there is a specified cutoff for actuarial studies within the commerce degree. This results in a higher drop out rate for actuarial studies at UNSW, as actuarial studies is only...

    (urgent) Actuarial Studies Questions

Employment for actuarial students would depend more on the individual (interpersonal skills, intelligence, extracurricular) in my opinion rather than which university you attended to gain your exemptions. However, UNSW is probably a safer option in terms of flexibility if you realise actuarial...

    Accounting vs Investment Banking

I think they would, but not sure to what extent, as you could dealing with a variety of clients. As an intern, for actuarial consulting, I'm required to sign forms stating that I and my immediate family will not trade in restricted securities by their definition (including any leverage...
