the purpose of rationalising the denominator is to make the denominator a whole number and multiplying by root6 would give us a whole number.
but when there are 2 terms (1 + root3) we have to multiply it by the conjugate as that gives us a whole number.
if you do 4unit all that happens is that your 2 unit hsc mark doesn't count
3u and 4u will both count as 2 units each, so 4 units of maths(3u and 4u) will count not 6 units.
