    maths needed for physics?

Agree 102%! I have students in the same boat. I brought in my first year engineering books and lecture notes to give them a sense of reality.. Some got the message.. It's hard to see students set themselves up with unrealistic goals and expectations only to get disappointed.

    maths needed for physics?

Maths and Physics require the same type of thinking. If you struggle at Mathematics, odds are you will struggle in Physics. Each year that I have taught, the General Maths students always finish at the bottom. I don't want to discourage you, but this is fact.

The UV Catastrophe and Quantum Theory

Don't need to know WHY the curve happens, but an easy way of thinking about it is relating it to 'probability'. A 4000K black body is a black body with an average temperature of 4000K, but there may be areas which differ from that temperature. With a certain temperature, there is an associated...

Standard English is the ATAR killer. Explain.

It scales the same as advanced, but its aligning is horribru. Out of nearly 32,000 last year: 291 Band 6s 20,000 Band 3/4

    2013 Age of Silicon crew.

I'm actually very surprised also! I am going to try and find out the schools which do it. Might prove beneficial to think about doing it

    2013 Age of Silicon crew.

In 2012 Geophysics - 131 Medical - 2944 Astro - 2150 Q2Q - 4147 Age of Silicon - 65 Less than 1% do Age of Silicon now. Geophysics used to be the rarest pre-2010, but for the last 3 years Age of Silicon has had fewer numbers than Geophysics.

relevance of the prelim physics course to the hsc course

If you are reasonably intelligent then Band 5 is still possible. I would be inclined to say that Band 6 would be out of reach if you do not have a solid understanding of relevant preliminary stuff, especially from Moving About.

    Prelim Physics Vector Addition Question

Do you go to a school in Parramatta? A couple of my tutoring students were trying to explain a similar question to me, but couldn't quite explain it clearly! Are we to assume that everything is in equilibrium? (I.e., F3 not the resultant, but equal in magnitude to the resultant, but in opposite...

Physics Tutoring For HSC 2014 -- Starting Term 3 Holidays, 2013 [FILLING FAST!]

I think I have given 4 x $50 cash prizes so far this term? Losing count of my monies!!! Although I haven't advertised for my preliminary class in 2014, I have already had 3 students contact me wishing to enrol, so if you are interested in enrolling for Preliminary Physics, starting late-January...

perform an investigation to demonstrate magnetic levitation (4.3.2.)

It doesn't specify that it needs to be magnetic levitation due to Meissner Effect. A very common practical for this is to use regular bar magnets and some nails fixed into a piece of wood (to ensure the bar magnets dont 'slip' past each other), then just put the opposite poles on top of each...

    Projectile Motion Using Calculus

It really depends on the marking scheme. For instance, some marking schemes would use 'substitutes values into correct/valid equations' Equations not in the syllabus or not derived may be considered as invalid. I always tell my students, if they want to use the range equation or something...

Magnetic Flux and Position of the coil

It is not the amount of flux actually hitting the coil itself, it is the number of flux lines passing through the area of the coil or 'threading the coil', which is this 'empty inner coil' you are talking about :)
