Regretting your course, regretting your choice of uni?

Regretting Computer and Mathematical Sciences & Commerce @ UWA - first year units are crap and I only have lectures for the rest of my course (apart from econometrics tute and statistics lab) so I should have done something online.

Please Help! I don't know what to choose! I need your opinion!

Dental students at UWA have about 40 contact hrs a week - I doubt I'd want to work after that. I think your options are: Start a medical-science (I doubt there will be any overlap which sucks), have a GPA over 5.5 and transfer into it. (Thats what happens at UWA.) Gap year and sit UMAT Do a...

    Probabality..

Hope its better than WA. In applicable mathematics we have a chapter in our books called 'Counting techniques' - basically factorials, commutations and permutations. We did an inclass test on this which basically everyone flunked out on THEN we had a seminar with the chief marker who said this...

    Trig

That was quite careless considering how much not cancelling too much was emphasised when I did this in year 11. Don't know how I ended up doing that then since I'm always worried about these sorts of things - especially with changing denominators of limits.

    Failing after studying everything properly?

I got 30% in my calculus trials compared to my average of 63% (was 69% after my mid-years). Shit happens, I ended up getting 60 something in my HSC exam for a scaled&moderated mark of 59. Same thing happened in my HSC for physics, chem and applicable maths - I was on 70 average for chem and...

    Trig

    sin x = tanx/2 =sinx/2cosx 2cosx = 1 cosx = 1/2 (At this stage you probably can do something with cosx = adj/hyp) x = cos^-1(1/2) x = pi/3

Can we use the nCr and nPr keys for probability?

Getting a problem from word form to mathematical form is ~50% of the marks When I did probability (wasn't general) I was told just to leave it in that nCr form and I would get full marks.

    Probabality..

Am I doing it wrong thinking: P(Win atleast one) = 1 - P(Not win anything) = 1 - 28C5/30C5 = 9/29 Well if the last person is right I am... damn I feel good doing year 12 general maths :sun:

    Your calculator is LIAR.

So would typing in ((1+1/n)^n)^X be accurater than e^x on your calculator as e^1 = lim(x->inf) (1+1/x)^x (given n is 9 million or something stupidly large)

    Integrate e^-(x^2)

It was in the WA Calculus syllabus for a while I think - we had a practical assignment on it.

    Integrate e^-(x^2)

Thats what I thought of doing (after I put it in Mathematica) :rofl2:

Differentials between personal and industrious trading?

Should I actually consider completing any more economics after my first year if I want to do econometric orientated operations research? Chances are I'll be doing the Econometrics unit at UWA and maybe the 'Mathematics for Economics' unit - what I see happening is though since I'm not doing an...

Usefulness of finance major vs. math/stats

I'd assume maths/stats would only help you in risk management/operation risk which I'd assume is covered in the CA&/CPA program. There are quite a few risk management jobs which require the use of SAS, SQL and R which you'd get out of stats. Heres some examples from Seek.com.au Perhaps...

Differentials between personal and industrious trading?

Are there many differences between trading done by firms (UBS, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche bank etc.) compared to trading done by everyday people? Is it just the precision in hedging/forecasting due to using an extensive amount of money? From reading forums such as Wilmott it appears that you need a...
