    Confused on a math question

No. You assumed that the parabola was monic (the leading term was 1). This doesn't have to be the case- and isn't in the case of this question.

    Confused on a math question

Hints: 1. The general equation of a parabola is y=ax^2+bx+c 2. Sub in the two conditions for the intercepts- you'll end up with the value of c and one part of a simultaneous equation 3. Differentiate the parabola, find the value for x that makes the derivative zero and sub in the the equation...

Need some advice/tips on this essay question

Thanks but it really wasn't much. I've already written a full essay on that exact question so I just copied my intro and then just summarized a few other things. I can send you the full essay if you want.

Need some advice/tips on this essay question

You don't really need to isolate economic growth or development in this essay- the question refers to the influence of various organisations on promoting globalisation (increasing trade, integration, investment etc.). Having said this, I would mention development through discussion of the World...

raw marks to top the state

I don't think 115 is enough to top. One of my friends this year got something like 116 and he came 3rd.

    HSC 2012 MX1 Marathon #2 (archive)

Re: HSC 2012 Marathon :) No worries, I'll get on it right away :) BTW, I think it was more Q2 (they never put complex questions this easy that late I don't think)

    ANU Maths Day - 2012

True. I enjoyed it heaps- the relay though was too easy for the time frame they gave us. The swiss killed me though, after your team, I only got two of them...

    ANU Maths Day - 2012

Thanks but I don't think ripped is the right word. I actually thought we had come second to Canberra College or whatever and the other teams were quite close as well. Did you guys get full marks for Q10 BTW?

    inverse trig

Think about it like this. Is there any value of x that you can sub in that makes the expression undefined? cosx is defined for every value of x and will give a value between -1 and 1. arccos is defined between -1 and 1, therefore all values of x will give a valid value (this isn't phrased well)...

How to maximise your maths examination marks: Tips from the HSC Examiners

The first is correct. The second isn't. Generally, you can give time very accurately because things like half seconds etc. do exist but half humans do not.

Soz :(. The next one can be yours

    Sequence Problem?

    Its obvious that a=50 and d=1: T(n)=50+(n-1) 150 (the last term)= 50+n-1 n=101 Therefore there are 101 terms

What do you mean this debate isn't settled? Cathode rays are electrons aren't they?

    Conic Proofs

I don't think you need to know the general chord (the proof isn't that hard except for the trig. What you do it find the gradient normally in paramteric and then use the general formula of the line but you 'expand' all the trig using sums and products which then cancel out fairly nicely. ). I've...

2000 HSC Exam (Snow Plough Question)

Yeah I did it but I'm a 4U student. This is very hard for a 2U paper- maybe Q6/7 of a 3U paper.

2000 HSC Exam (Snow Plough Question)

Really? I wouldn't expect many to get it but is it really that hard? Once you've set up the equation (which you just have to integrate the result from a), you just sub in values and solve... The algebra is a bit involved but only 3?

2000 HSC Exam (Snow Plough Question)

It's hard but a decent 3U student should be able to do it.

    Exam Strategy

As you do the test, circle questions that are really easy to make sillies on. Anything involving trig for example is so easy to get wrong with minuses in the wrong place etc. Finish the paper quickly (don't rush though- you want to be clinical. Things like differentiation you should just do, not...

    Refraction Question

Yes I know. This is where it gets tricky because different sources have different definitions. In the real world though, I think a change in direction is neccessary. Note http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refraction Regardless though, your teacher might give you the mark if you show her the book...
