    Same Sex Marriage Debate

I dont think the SSM issue will effect Labour's hold on the area - ultimately, it's an isolated niche issue. I wasnt surprised at the Western Sydney vote, but I was really shocked at the regional/Rural vote, especially in Southern Queensland where it was quite close.

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

Agreed - the media is making a lot out of the whole vote in Western Sydney, but essentially this was a unique issue and I doubt it indicates a change in voting patterns otherwise. Anyone who is honestly surprised that an area with a high Muslim/Chinese/Indian migrant population voted No needs...

I dont think it's fully anonymous - each person is a barcode for distribution/replacement purposes. However, Id imagine that the ABS was restricted in how it used the data and probably has to destroy all records at some point.

If you look at turnout as well, the districts with the highest turnouts generally went for yes by large margins, whereas those with a no majority typically featured lower turnout.

Any way you cut it, NSW voted Yes by a 14 point margin, which would still be considered a landslide. It was a dominant victory.

With immigrants, it's to be expected, I very much felt they were an x-factor in the race. You find over time though, values do change. By the second and third generation, many ethnics will have assimilation with Australian culture. Looking at the Southern Europeans for example, the second...

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

That was probably the least surprising to me - I come from an ethnic family (albeit, we have been in the country for several decades) and most of my extended family voted no. Antony Green from the ABC summed it up pretty well "ABC election analyst Antony Green said these results indicated that...

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

You were right on the money. I have to say, I had a gut feeling the no vote would gut out a narrow victory. Either way, I expected the results to be close (max 10 points) so I was very surprised to see a 23 point victory. Even though the polls largely pointed to this margin, I had a strong...

    borrowing money from bank

This to be honest - just an FYI, banks generally avoid loaning money to the unemployed (as do most reputable institutions). Unless this is an urgent expense that cannot be avoided, I wouldnt get a loan. Getting a loan for non-essentials when you dont have a job is awful money management...

Are you passionate about law, is it something you think you will really enjoy doing? If the answer is yes. then law is a good choice.

    law school?

To be fair, Ii you are passionate about law and willing to put in the hard yards, then the work is definitely out there. However, if you are getting into law because it pays well, is prestigious and/or because you think it's a safe choice, think again. If those things are what you want, then...

    law school?

I worked on graduate recruitment one year for a Big 6 firm and uni prestige is unfortunately a factor. Most industries generally dont consider the uni, however law is a very old school boys club and partners very much look at prestige. That being said, if you get good grades (very important in...

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

There was a movement a long time ago driving a push for equal rights. Conservatives and churches were up in arms, stating how this movement was upsetting social norms and warning of dire consequences should equal rights be granted. The supporters of this movement were militant, employing...

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

Let me be very clear, I went to Catholic institutions as a matter of convenience and practicality. Im not a Catholic and Id never be a part of their organisation - their history and especially the recent sex abuse issues disgusts me. I disagree but that's partly because I believe that Paul...

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

Polygamous marriages create issues surrounding divorce, property rights and wills which could potentially hurt dependents. You cant marry a child or a pet because they cant provide consent (therefore, they are hurt).

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

To be honest, if we held a plebiscite on those issues, I guarantee you, it would generate just as much interest (might I add, wealth inequality and stagnant incomes are definitely issues I feel strongly about).

    Same Sex Marriage Debate

Im actually very religious and at the end of the day, I respect their views irrespective even though I strongly disagree with them. However, Im also very strongly against the culture of my religion and this issue is a small part of the much larger problems I have with it. Personally, I believe...
