Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

My son didn't care much for fiction books either and it didn't seem to harm him. He became proficient at reading by looking up facts on the internet. The few fiction books he read at that age included Captain Underpants, Geronimo Stilton and a popular humorous series by an Australian author...

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

Being able to do things doesn’t always mean an individual can teach. To be able to teach effectively, one has to be able to see things from the student’s perspective. I’m not sure how good DS would be at this (he is also focused on HSC assessments ATM), whereas your post shows that you have...

    How To Catch Up?

Agree with Extremelyboreduser, and as discussed in another recent thread, it’s essential to cover the gaps between 5.2 and 5.3. Learning maths is foundational - if you have gaps, you can’t build your understanding effectively.

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

@idkkdi, I think you might fit the bill of what Beyblader is looking for. You’ve just finished year 12, you have insight from your own experiences and you have given this quite a bit of consideration. I suspect you’re about the right age for a 9 yr old. I think kids are often a bit wary of the...

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

I’m a huge fan of team sports for building team spirit and encouraging collaboration, however, athletics & activities like speedcubing gave my son a very strong drive to continually improve PBs. His focus has never been on winning but always improving his times in track events and his distances...

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

I second idkkdi’s suggestion of the APSMO problem solving book. My son was 9 when the OC teacher at his school put him in the Yr 5 OC class APSMO team and he was their top scorer. He went on to achieve perfect scores in the next two APSMO comps. It laid a good foundation for AIMO & AMO in high...

School Not Letting Certain Students Into Advanced.

I’m not suggesting external credentialling - schools can perform their own assessments. I’m just suggesting a bridging course. TBH, in this digital era, I would have thought a motivated student could cover most of the content on their own, but the number of times this presents as an issue (the...

You suggested upthread a term 1 test..

School Not Letting Certain Students Into Advanced.

In this forum & IRL, it seems to be very common that students are turned away from the Advanced maths course because they have only completed 5.2 and not 5.3. Someone should develop an efficient bridging course with the 5.3 content that is not covered in 5.2.

School Not Letting Certain Students Into Advanced.

This problem (of students being blocked from doing higher stage 6 maths levels based on stage 5 content) comes up frequently. It’s a travesty that keen students are blocked from learning. Are there bridging courses (eg. at coaching colleges) that can enable these students to take the Advanced...

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. With a bit more insight now, I’d second CM_Tutor’s comments - ‘ownership’ is a vital element; it’s much, much more effective to find out what they are interested in and support them. Videos like ‘Backyard Science’ and ‘Mythbusters’ might encourage him to try...

Learning tutor for 9 year old boy or 12 year old girl?

Just curious - you mentioned a 12 y.o. girl in your original post - wouldn’t it be more appropriate to organise tutoring for the older child? My eldest received the most help from me throughout her school years (mostly checking her answers when she disagreed with erroneous textbooks and with...

    Year 8 ICAS results?

It used to be at the bottom of previous ICAS hard copy reports, but it’s school specific, so if/when you change schools, you have to wait for the first printed report at your new school.

Looking to go maths tutoring - Talent 100, Dr Du or Mr Ye?

There's a different 'cost' worth considering. Three hours a week plus commuting (when everyone isn't under lockdown) is a huge portion of the student's disposable time. A good 1-on-1 tutor who can make one hour a week really count is worth so much more in terms of this hidden cost.

Looking to go maths tutoring - Talent 100, Dr Du or Mr Ye?

Competition may have motivated some people, but history teaches us that collaboration is often the better strategy. It has been widely thought that the falling out between Britain & Europe over whether Newton or Leibniz deserved more credit for discovering calculus slowed the Brits for some time...

Cost doesn’t appear to be an advantage of class based tutoring at some centres.

    Who’s finished their exams

You finished your exams just in time - now you can stay up all night watching the world chess championships. Maybe it’ll be another series of drawn games with blitz tie-breakers. 🤣

    Complex calculator

My son, who’s just finished the MEx2 HSC exam, said he found the fx100AU Plus (2nd edition) to be superior to the calculator models recommended by the school (which has only started offering MEx2 in recent years), so I bought one for each student who took MEx2 as a subject. It can potentially...

Accepted organic length to be soluble in water

I wasn’t suggesting that there is a specific cut off for whether something is soluble or not - that is the original question posted. We agree that it’s context dependent.

Accepted organic length to be soluble in water

In most scenarios, it’s a matter of defining specifications which determine the appropriate cut off value on a continuous spectrum. It makes it easier to determine if a case is within or outside specifications (PhD level of chemistry applications would be very different to secondary school and...
