    Can I get a 99+ ATAR if I try?

This. You can't rely on school scaling to pull you up. Or subject scaling, or tuition. It all comes down to how effectively you identify your weaknesses and crush them. You may also want to ask yourself "Why do I want 99+"? Because a lot of the time, it's not necessarily what you need to do...

Anyone else's uni experience like this?

Yes. There are a lot of assholes and a lot of boring people and a lot of amazing ones too. That goes for not just uni but the world.

Should I integrate the two texts in my essay?

I separated. It helps ensure that the examiners are extremely clear about which texts you're talking about all times. You can get great results with either approach, but separation just makes life easier for your markers which means more likely to look favourably on your meekly cowering essays.

Advanced English - what's with the time constraints?

#notsureiftrolling A+ advice although not sure y u typ lik dis YOUUUUUUUUUU I had a friend who did this, he'd write 3 booklets and I'd write 3 pages. Sometimes we would be in the same row and I always pitied the guy in between us not knowing who to pace against

Advanced English - what's with the time constraints?

it's a trap I was going to say Get Over It but I entirely agree with you. I guess the thing is that students see exams differently from the education system (and by that I don't mean teachers - many of whom would likely agree with us). We want to demonstrate that we understand things, can...

    History and Memory General Question

Yes I did. You're recounting an exchange of letters between two individuals which has no actual bearing on the film itself. Therefore, unless you're actually using Romanuik's letters as a related text unto themselves, your material is not in fact relevant to the analysis the unit requires. Even...

    History and Memory General Question

Not a history essay. None of this actually analyses the text or presents a clear personal argument. As a result, you will not get any marking credit if you submit something like this in your essays or examinations. Focus instead on analysing how the use of techniques (particularly those...

    I was told...

Practice writing many essays instead of one. Give yourself a new question every week, and try answering it to the best of your ability. At the beginning you will suck harder than a recondensed singularity, but after a while you will slowly get less incompetent. This forces you to think on the...

    words

No more than 800 words in trials and I scored a 20 (see sig for which school's trials). You probably need around 1000 to get some decent character development and plotting done, so around the 1000-1200 point is probably what I would recommend. Rather than aiming to word-spam you would be better...

Need to know if this is normal?!

Common and entirely incorrect perception. First and foremost, aiming to be "on the right track" is a mug's game - because there IS no right track. You get good scores by coming up with reasonable arguments and backing them up with reasonable analysis. There is no "wrong" except for when you...

Why does Claudius care about why Hamlet is mad?

+1 Also see Claudius' soliloquy (3, iii): "My offence is rank..." My take is that Claudius is (in quite a similar way to Macbeth, that other ambitious chap) entirely cognisant of the sin that he's committed, and fears that divine intervention will pay him back for this. And he sees Hamlet as...

The Pianist or Spirited Away For Journeys Related Text?

BULLSHIT. If your teacher says that about Spirited Away, they obviously have not actually watched the film. In fact I would say you could do ANY recent Pixar, Dreamworks, or Disney film (and a lot of the older ones too) and perform extremely well in your exams. This sort of narrow-mindedness...

Can I Use The Namesake Film as A related text

If you're not studying the prescribed text in your unit, then I think it should be fine. Since you really enjoyed the film I don't want to discourage you from studying it, but at the same time be aware that some examiners may think you're trying to be cheap/lazy even though you're not. The...

    Journeys related text

Pretty much anything? I used Pan's Labyrinth for my HSC but so did almost half the other people in my year. As well as a David Malouf short story which I can't really remember because it wasn't hugely memorable. Just pick an interesting text that you personally enjoy and run with it. If I were...
