    too much english in maths!

We're not really picky. Just people who prefer a high signal-to-noise ratio in their communications. :p EDIT: On topic, a number of my lecturers have pointed at published papers in scientific journals, where the equation:word ratio is rarely as high as one might expect. Communicating with...

    Weird trig identity

A better method would probably be to take the identity you know: sin2x = (1/2)(1-cos2x) and replace x with 2x, giving you: sin22x = (1/2)(1-cos4x) which is trivial to integrate.

    Weird trig identity

Of course, if you're used to doing Int(sin2x dx), then you can always make the simple substitution u=2x and then proceed as normal.

    Trials stress

Hehe -- I think that's when I really started doing integration -- saw the formulae for various volumes and demanded a proof from my Yr 7 teacher. :p Was also quite impressed. *insert picture of light bulb turning on above strange cartoon caricature of me*

    Books turned into movies

The only example I can think of where movie > book: The Phantom of the Opera. Perhaps the untranslated French version is better. But then, I can't read that. :p I guess it's a little unfair to use PotO as an example though, given that it's more based on the musical than the book.

a day in the life of an anu student

Cherryblossom has a reputation? Didn't know that -- serves me right for not turning up here more often. :p *hides under his desk*

    Kumon

Some thoughts: I did Kumon as a way to get away from the boredom of maths at school. Started it in mid-97 (so this would be Yr 4) and completed the program (Q, which is as far as it goes in Australia atm) by some time which I can't recall. :p 2001, I think. Given that the stuff I was doing...

a day in the life of an anu student

Oo! *cue evil laugh* Feel free to hate me, but I suggest you grab lunch before joining the queue. :p (Note to self: Avoid cherryblossom if she turns up in Canberra for some reason. Especially if she's wielding a machete. Or an axe. Or even a hockey stick.) (Further note to self: If...

Yup, insane person doing maths/physics here. Pleased to make your acquaintance. Please come in, appreciate the decor (including random quotes from "Because I could not stop for Death", by Emily Dickinson, and a Declaration of Linear Independence), and do ignore the talking bunny rabbit. Oh...

ANU to build a canal... with your money

Haha, sounds like a plan! Pity it's a hoax...maybe they'll turn it into reality... ;) Ah, well, planning to move out of college next year anyway -- assuming I can find somewhere to live, that is. Muwhahahaha@stupid internet charges!

    First Semester Results

A 95 average is tough, and depends on a lot of different factors. Lecturers, the amount of scaling (much less scaling in uni than in HS), etc. Given that you're looking at PhB, I'd say you won't have too much trouble hitting 90-100% on all the *assignments* for the first couple of years...

a day in the life of an anu student

I hate to bring up an old thread...but just what is he doing at Chifley anyway? Hancock is the home of the science student! *insert random rant about mathematics being on fourth floor of said library...* And no, it's not that bad. Most of the time. Usually. It's better on days not ending...

What you want is here: http://www.anu.edu.au/psychology/teaching/clinicalprogramhandbook.php, or, more generally, here: http://www.anu.edu.au/psychology/teaching/programs.php. As for the odds -- pretty good if you do the work.

    ANU Open Day

...and insofar as time is concerned, it really depends on what you want to do. Check out the program here and plan your day -- perhaps leave Sydney at 8, get to Canberra by 11, spend a couple of hours at UC, grab lunch, then visit ANU in the afternoon. If people looking at maths and/or...

Wow, it's been a while since I checked BoS. :) Some comments from a second-year science PhB student: Essentially, what they'll be looking for in your referee reports is evidence that you are interested and capable enough to direct your own learning. The PhB is definitely a research-oriented...

*huggles ANU grading system* :) Two HDs so far, 98 for PHYS3002 and 96 for MATH3322 -- still waiting for results on the others -- stupid lecturers who go overseas and stupid project reports. Looking good for straight HDs though. I'm convinced marks tend to go up as you go through...
