but if you're in a "dumber" school you'll get scaled down instead of up

No. Because if you're going to get a 100 UAI, then you're already coming 1st in yoru subjects and so, are immune.

True, you don't.
But if you attend a school with less able students, it will be more difficult to get 100 if you aren't ranked 1st in everything. Then again, however, if you go to a school with less able students and you aren't coming 1st in everything, chances are you wouldn't get 100 at any other school.
The only real situation in which it's quite possible you could get 100 without coming 1st in everything is when the competition is fierce and the marks are high, which is most likely to happen at selective schools anyway.

EDIT: When I say "1st in everything", I'm exaggerating slightly - you have to come 1st in at least all but one or two of your subjects.

what do you need a 100 UAI for anyway? all that work just for something to brag about for a couple of days seems a bit pointless.

Not necessarily.
Even in "dumber" schools, there will most often be a few students who are more able. If you are deserving of 100, you will be amongst those few students and I'd assume the competition would cause marks to be close - in this situation, even if you aren't ranked 1st you won't feel the full brunt of the moderating process and you'll still do well.

For a UNSW and/or USyd scholarship - it's worth anywhere up to $25 000 (approx.)

First you get the 100 uai, then you gets the women, then you gets the POWER.
