Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread (2011)

Spent one hour today in a lecture on defining the natural numbers.

I.e. Coming up with 5 rules to uniquely define 0,1,2,3,4,5....

Lecturer was awesome though.

PSYC1001 course notes needed for tutorials... but not yet available in UCC as of yet?
and FRNC1611 seems hard.
but that's about it all, other than it being overly-fucking-crowded today omfg.
make sure you get jacqueline as your tutor for french

she is the greatest person witide has ever met

What subjects do you do? I think I saw such a student.

I do PSYC1001. Since the tutes don't start until next week, it's not a problem. And I did FRNC1611. It's easy :p FRNC1612 is harder. You have to study a book. FRNC1611 is all grammar. Eeeeasy.
ahh. that makes sense, haha :)
Yeah it doesn't seem too hard, it's just getting my head around the whole French thing after doing Japanese for so many years.. and Alice seems like a lovely person. I'm not sure who I have for tutorials yet. are you still doing French now?

Hey I'm doing French too. :D It seems a bit daunting but I hope it'll become easier. Which tutorial group are you in? I'm in 5.

So what's the point of getting a textbook if we buy The Unit of Study Notes which I presume are a heap of notes already done for you?

For some subjects there is no point.
if you think the lecture notes are enough then don't buy the textbook

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread (2011)

Well sometimes subjects/lecturers will set both readings from the Course Reader as well as readings from a textbook as compulsory readings. Sometimes the textbook can go through things more structure/clearer than the course readers. However, I've tended to find that if there are subjects with both course readers and textbooks, I rarely in the end actually read the textbook unless i'm having difficulty understanding something/want more information- in which case, don't buy the textbook and just go to the library (much cheaper).

On the other hand, i just spent $498 on textbooks this morning for three subjects (I already had the books for the 4th subject). I hate law textbooks- most of the time you can't even sell them on afterwards because they are already out of date/a new version has come out. :(

I had Alice as my tutor in second semester. She's really nice. And yeah, I'm doing FRNC2611 and 2614. I'm in with the advanced kids in 2614 who speak French fluently already and know so much about the culture. My friends and I were sitting there like O_______O even though we all got HDs last year. Ugh.

It always takes that long, and if you don't read it all there's a good chance you won't know all the quiz answers. It's complete crap.

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread (2011)

haven't been on bos in ages what is happening to me

cruisiest timetable evar for the next few weeks, just monday and thursday mornings, only one subject really (not counting pracs).

majority of this semester will be prac though, I think 8 weeks in total, but it goes into stuvac/semester break as well so probably only like 6 weeks of the semester strictly speaking.

last year woooooooooo god I feel old
