For what its worth, I multiplied it by 4, but I had the initial working completely wrong so it didnt matter anyway. So yeah, I thought you had to multiply by 4, but I suck at probability so I dunno...

If you put 1/4 x 39/51, then you have to multiply by 4. This is because 1/4 is the chance of picking a card from a particular suit. x4 makes it ANY suit. It's easier to just say the first card can be anything and call it 1 x 39/50. Get it?

Hey all,

I took the time to write up some solutions (hand written).

Let me know what you think of my answers..do you agree or disagree?

B.t.w. I did all these in the exam apart from the final question 10(b)(ii).

Thanks.

Note: Q4(c)(iv) asked for major sector; I found the minor sector. Therefore, the correct answer should be: 5n/2 units squared.
(this answer was later found in part (v) i.e. A(Shaded-Circle-C)
Thanks for letting me know.

not sure if i agree with you on 9c) (ii) and (iii) . For 9c) (ii), she increases her annual contribution by 6% each year. So, her first contribution is A1=1000(1.06) for when the son was first born, i.e. hes zero. The second contribution made is when he is one, and the value she invests is a 6% increase of the previous year plus another 6% for the interest; i.e. A2= A1( 1.06)(1.06)= 1000(1.06)^3 and so on. Am i right ? If not then please correct. I checked my answers with yours and i made so many silly mistakes =( wanting a band 6 but not so sure now ..

Hey, in part (ii)

The first contribution she makes gains interest for 3 years:
A1 = 1000(1.06)^3

The second contribution she makes is increased by 1.06, and gains interest for 2 years only:
A2 = 1000(1.06)x(1.06)^2 = 1000(1.06)^3

The third ..... is increased by 1.06^2 and gains interest for 1 year:
A3 = 1000(1.06)^2x(1.06) = 1000(1.06)^3

A(TOTAL) = A1 + A2 + A3 = 3x1000(1.06)^3
A(N) = nx1000(1.06)^n

I hope that clears things up :D

Ah, I buggered up that question. Damn it, those are one of my strengths as well. Your answer's right. I think I kept adding 1000x1.06 so I ended up with 1000 times a geometric series.

For 8a)ii I wrote during October since it is within the 10th month (10.644) would that be correct?

And if it hasn't been said (cbf reading whole thread), for 7 (b)i couldn't you just make cuberoot(3)=sinx/cosx therefore, cuberoot(3)=tanx???

I did the same as you for both questions. Good news is yes that's a perfectly fine way to do question 7. Bad news is I think we screwed up with October.

yer...1.0 months means January has finished...so 10.0 months means October has finished...i.e. we are in November
