Hey guys.
Current yr12er n im really interesting in mining and petroluem engineering...petroleum mainly. but like worried bout the uai.... i heard at the careers market its guna go up. my question is...is there usually more applicants then spots or not enuf applicants.

no one can accurately predict the uai cutoffs - as you said they are merely an indicator of the number and quality of the applicants relative to the number of places available. but the cutoffs generally don't change too much from year to year, so try not to worry too much about it.

also UNSW has quite a generous alternative entry scheme for engineering called FEAS (http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/feas/index.htm). i know someone who was accepted into electrical engineering (cutoff 85) with a UAI of 75. this scheme takes into account your potential as an engineer by looking at subject marks individually and also interviewing you.

can i just say this too: are you interested in mining and petroleum engineering because you have glanced at the average salaries for both of these?

i am not trying to put you off either of these careers, but both of these types of engineering normally require a drastic change of lifestyle: for mining you will be living in the middle of nowhere in Western Australia probably, and with petroleum you could well end up on an oil rig in the Indian Ocean for months on end.

money is definitely not everything in a career. just think about where your interests and abilities truly lie, and i am sure that you will exceed in any field that you choose.

YES UR RIGHT I LOOKED AT SALARIES. but like yeah i heard im guna hv to change my lifestyle n move around alot, but i dont mind that. n i really find it interesting....the only problem is getting there....dunno if i can make the cut off. duz the feas take alot of ppl or like very little.

mining and petroleom doesn't usually have any vacancies after the main round. this would suggest that's it's very popular. it's also a very small class (compared to other engineering streams that have 150+) and with the mining boom and everything that's happening around lately, i wouldn't have high hopes on getting in with less than 85. but there's always still a chance i'm just speculating here

Anyway, yes the UAI is 85.

The Alternative Entry Scheme allows you to get in if you show you are interested in the course. You may need to get at least 75 - 80.

Probably not. If there was no demand for it, I would change fields.

Umm how? If you are working for an industy that has no demand, then it would be pointless.

Unless people discover a way to mass produce metals and coal using a cheaper method within the next 60 years, I doubt this will affect me. So if you are trying to argue, it's pretty redundant.

Not necessarily, the thing about mining engineering is that it utilises all the facets of different types of engineering. So you can always fall back. Plus, I doubt mining will go bust. You need natural resources for EVERYTHING.

with mining engineering you can always fall back on civil engineering they both have similar subjects. I saw an add in the paper saying Civil Engineering + Rio tinto training = mining engineering.

you couldn't be more wrong there. civil and mining students share probably less than 5 subjects all up, and most of that are probably shitty 1st year subjects.

civil is nothing like mining. mining is nothing like civil. they can work together but it doesn't mean they're the same.

"Students who achieve a UAI (or equivalent) between 75.00 and 87.95 will be considered for admission under the Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS)."

If you're really interested in petroleum engg, good luck! Don't go for the salaries - getting a job is harder than it sounds So if you know you want it, go for it.
