Just a quick question..

I was just wondering if the $99 fee has to be paid annually or once you pay it you have it for the rest of your degree?

and also is it worth it?

Annually.

The card will expire at the end of the year.

depends how much you buy at uni. I probably got about half the value of the card last year (a few manning shows discounts, a few uni party discounts...i usually bought 1 or 2 meals a week from around uni (that's about $40 worth right there)

IMO it's not because (and this is after having one for a year):

- Coffee @ Ralph's is $2.
- Meals off-campus are cheaper. $6 thai/rolls from the bakery near Newtown station/fucking ANYTHING in Newtown or Glebe> shit you get on campus. I can't think of ONE nice place to eat that you get an access discount. Manning is shit and level 2 smells like dirty feet. Jugs of beer are expensive WITH a discount.
- You just go along to a club's meeting and no one gievs a fuck. Seriously.
- Who cares about saving 20% on bottled water? Just bring a bottle from home.

+ a few other 15% off random food things at uni.

That's all i can remember so far,
basically clubs and socs can't exisit without you buying access cards.

Even using toilets/banks/chemist/food facilities in Wentworth and Manning - building services also cost money

If they didn't exisit we'd all complain, like people at other universities.
so pay up and enjoy the ride :)

With regards to the above quote,
I've taken part in several clubs, and i completely disagree with jb_nc's apathetic view.
one thing amazing that happened to me was EWB sent me to the philippines to build houses!

This year i am the president of the St. Vincent de Paul society, and i have 300 volunteers in my club.
we run
-Homeless night van
-redfern taskforce breakfast van
-soup kitchen
-buddies day (for children in foster care)
-Kids camp
-fundraising activites.

Having an access card, will mean each time an access card holder volunteers, the USU can pay their contribution in food/other stuff for the disadvantaged.

So go on!give it a try!
just because everything isn't handed to you on a silver plate, doesn't mean it doesn't exisit

This poster is also all over the promotional material regarding USYD and is probably paid to post shit like this.

They also probably loved compulsory student unionism too.

Just to clarify: *everyone* picks up a new Access card at O-Week, alongside all the first-years?
& this means we get new photos as well?
...
Excellent. =)

[My opinion: Joining clubs = good, therefore Access card = good, even if $99 = a bit much at first glance.]

I think it's good value for most people - but it does depend on your individual circumstances, and whether you personally get more enjoyment from buying an access card, than you would spending the $99 on something else.

I think the cost is reasonable. In the past, students were slapped with a compulsory hefty payment of $300+ even if they didn't use any of the services!
