I'm a first year doing actuarial and app fin @ macq so i might be of some help.
In terms of why people choose to do it at macq it's probably because of shit like this
'Macquarie University was the first university in the world to have its actuarial courses recognised as being of equivalent standard to the corresponding subjects of the (U.K.) Institute of Actuaries. As a result of this, Macquarie students with sufficient grades were granted exemption from the corresponding U.K. exams. The Macquarie program has since been emulated by other universities in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Singapore.'
I know other people that chose it to be different from the typical boring asian b-com degree @ unsw
and they also thought there would be a better quality of students at macquarie because of how you can't use bonus points to get in etc etc.
another thing is alot of the lecturers teaching at unsw were taught at macquarie anyways so lots of people believe you may aswell go to the source of knowledge (macq).
Also to whoever said the social atmosphere at macq uni is shit is screwed up in the head. In the actuarial club (ASSOC) there is poker nights, meet the professionals night, trivia, pool comps, problem solving comps, camps, a joint actuarial ball etc. there is plenty of stuff to do if you really want to get involved.
so far the lecturers for my actuarial subjects have been really good, and i can't wait until 2nd/3rd/4th yr when i start doing more actuarial units so i can have the better quality lecturers.
umm feel free to ask anything else, in the end tho i'm just a noob first year but ill try my best anyways haha.
