I still don't see what's wrong with dial-up if you're not doing anything illegal.

You'd make an excellent Minister for Communications, IT & The Arts :)

There's the fact that it doesn't tie up a phone line, that's a big bonus in my opinion :) I guess it depends on the individual scenario, but our dialup costs, with calls and the second line included, were equivalent to what we pay for ADSL now anyway, so in our case it was a bit of a no brainer.

Even if you don't tranfser large volumes of data, the speed is a massive help when you're working remotely. I use ssh and work with machines at Uni, and having done this with both dialup and ADSL, it's pretty obvious to me the amount of extra time that was wasted while I was on dialup.

I've also found it to be infinitely more reliable than any of the dialup service providers which I've used over the years (And yes, there have been a few). When you're working with deadlines and working remotely, it's REALLY nice to be able to count on the connection being good to go when you're ready, rather than when it is :)

Aside from productivity though, you've also got things like online gaming (Which also happen to be legal) , and a faster connection makes this a much more enjoyable experience too :)

yep we were in the same position. adsl worked out cheaper than dialup once you include call costs. and obviously faster = better, otherwise we'd all be driving holden barinas :)

isnt iprimus offering adsl2? anyone know if it requires a different modem? is it still pppoe?

Yeah, that was the same with us and cable. Also, Slide_Rule, I've found for web design that cable is a necessity. Having to continually refresh pages running scripts, or just altering designs to see changes was almost impossible on dialup (to get things done), but cable has made it 10x easier to upload files into a live testing environment.

It is still normal ADSL but they have removed the artificial limits imposed by Telstra on the technology:).

Oh, by the way, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ speeds are pointless for me unless the ISP's allow for more download limit:).

I'm a little behind in the times, so whats this ADSL 2 ? Is it just a faster version of ADSL or is there more to it?

nice, so what your saying is that you can get it from being further away from the exchange than normal ADSL? like more than 5km? That would help heaps for my friends who live outta town.

faster adsl. It better get to >8mbps or optus better upgrade to docsis2
where does it say that?

ADSL2 is just a little more range and a bit more upload per channel.

to get 8Mbps you will still need a lot of channels and still be expensive.

I think the speeds wrx is talking about are thsoe currently being delivered in the states via ADSL/ADSL like technology.

I think the theoretical limit on ADSL is something like 15-20km range and 8-12mb/s.

Only a select few suburbs in Sydney have access to it though, although I still wouldn't get it if I had access to it:).

I'm interested.

Or, I was until it wanted me to become a new customer, and asked if I wanted to churn or just sign up for a new account. What? Did I miss something?

Edit: Nevermind, I actually read what "register your interest means"...
