Re: Anti-Privatization

I'm sure there are; what are your reasons for or against?

I think the nutcase libertarian mob has dispersed actually. WAF has moderated in his old age, volition has disappeared, and Schroedinger supports the public provision of both services identified by the OP.

Graney might be the best bet for dissent?

I don't agree with any intense revolution of sorts but I see these two fronts as the most flexible in order to create a more socialist government.... I think that everyone should have equal education and health care, I don't see why people would argue with that.... this is just social commentary btw.

Well I don't think that private hospitals/schools should be disposed off, but nor do I believe public hospitals/schools should be entirely privatised, either.

Well, in that respect, everywhere where total egalitarianism has been tried it's failed, usually spectacularly. That's not to say it couldn't work in the future, but it's somewhat.. unlikely to.

I'd hope that they one day cease to exist but not because of a law but because public resources are good enough that the demand for them dies.

Yeah that's more along the lines of what I am trying to say.... So basically socialized health care can be potentially inefficient...... so really you need an effective public system beforehand... useless discussing at these times.

I find the idea of both terribly barbaric. That those who can afford are entitled to better education or health services. I do think that's pretty fucked up.

Unfortunately, though, like all things privatised, it is far more difficult to nationalise them once again. One day, hopefully, but it'll take a leader with a shitload of balls (and somehow we need to hope that the next leader to come along just doesn't go off and allow for private schools/hospitals again).

Health I would never like to see privatized. Health in a country like Aus should be accessible to all people, with a decent level of standard, regardless of financial status.

Education is a bit different. I think if you can afford to send your child to a private school with diamond eating as an extra curricular activity, then that's your prerogative. As long as the standards of state schools don't become substandard.

Thing is though, the state has to set its standard of education or health at a certain level, and no matter how high that is there's always going to be people who can afford to/want to top that up, and it's not disadvantaging anyone else in the broader community. Wherefore barbarism?
