The world was amazed at the speed at which the covid-19 vaccines were released. Yet malaria kills many more millions than covid and unfortunately malaria vaccines are much more difficult to produce.
Mosquirix is an expensive vaccine and does not come close to the WHO 75% efficacy goal. It’s about 56%. Nevertheless since 2021 it had been released to 12 African countries as this is better than nothing.
However there is a new vaccine R21/Matrix-M which is cheaper and has 78% efficacy and is being rolled out this month in 30 African countries. This breakthrough is the subject of this documentary.
It is the first BBC Horizon episode since 2022
