are we allowed to use abbreviations in the hsc? (1 Viewer)

eg for english are we allowed to use abbreviations like BNW for brave new world, and BR for blade runner?

my teacher said we cant but i see exemplar responses and they do it.

its usually not a problem, so long as you write the full name once

eg: blah blah blah Brave New World (BNW), blah blah blah

yeh u can, as long as they know what your on about. I've seen this guy writing "+" instead of "and". He did very well too.

my teacher said you can do anything as long as you write it in full first and then put it in brackets. someone asked her if you can do something random such as ____Brave New World (banana)____ she said she supposes so.

i personally would only use if for titles, after that it makes you look lazy and they will look down on the writing

abbreviations in the hsc are FINE as long as you notify the marker for convenience, for example:

Within A. Huxley's Brave New World (herein BNW) .. from this point you can use BNW

But I guess there is a certain perception that your too lazy to rewrite the title again vs. the time factor of writing it again.

what? are u going to lose marks for abbreviation?
as long ur writing is fluent and the markers know what u are talking, i dont think they'll discriminate against ur shorthand. and i dont think abbreviations show ur laziness, we only have 40min to communicate all ur important ideas.

yeh i've seen people write abbreviations for alot of things eg. 'TNN' for the night of nights, and i've seen '+' 'ie' , therefore (the three dots) and so on..

but they were exemplary responses... so i guess its ok.

I don't think that is a good idea, even if it says write an email to a friend.

I once lost marks on a letter for English because one of my sentences was "too long and didn't make much sense". I tried explaining that that was the idea because the "writer" was a senial old man. My teacher (who didn't mark it) said I should have clarified it with a sentence such as "as I look back on what I have written, and I see it does not make much sense; I'm getting forgettful in my old age."

its not hte time saved, its just easier to write it that way. my writings more fluent
