It's not "age", it's life... once u get older, have more responsibilities, want a more secure lifestyle (like your own) for your family...
alot of people become conservative.

If you never have family etc i'm sure u can stay fairly liberal.

It's not fear of change, convervatives are willing to make necessary changes.
Some conservatives feel that abortion is murder, not wanting to make abortion easier isn't a matter of them being scared of change, it's a matter of them disagreeing on the issue.

It's not about "me first", it's about being in control of your own life and the decisions you make, its about ultimate freedom. A Conservative can be compassionate, they give a % of their earnings to various charities, or they choose how to contribute to society.

Liberals (not howard's Liberals), generally like to make alot of bold statements and put in place programs which cost alot and are ineffective. They are often more worried about the 'meaning', than the 'result'.
The UN is a good example of this.

Well i'm glad you brought up the issue about donating money.
Liberals often like to throw money at situations, like dictators, humanitarian problems etc. Conservatives are more likely to get on the ground and actually do things...

Greed is an aspect of it, but i could argue that the entire concept of social welfare for liberals is the same as u described with donations. They simply want to give them money because it makes them feel better.

BTW, what's wrong with having a house 3x too big for you? You remind me of the people bitching about GW Bush's inauguration costing 2x their initial donation to the tsunami. The next week there was the oscars, which would of cost alot more than bush's inauguration, the dresses diamons etc etc etc... where was the complaints about that?
Are you going to live in a house that is the bear minimum to live in?

I think the point is that there is no need for someone to live beyond their financial means and/or physical needs just for the sake of appearances. In all likelihood that interpretation is wrong, though.

I guess I'd be one of those people who wasn't thrilled with how Bush's inauguration was double the cost of their initial donation. But that doesn't mean I support the bloody extravagence of the oscars and outlandish events like that either.

Well what are you doing on the internet elisabeth?! you don't need the internet! come on, give up your internet access and instead donate that money to the tsunami victims!!
While you're at it, are you wearing clean, new clothes? quick go trade them for some older, crappier clothes because the money could go to the tsunami victims!!

While we're at it, what are all these musems for? cinemas etc? they're just useless capitalist crap we should get rid of them so we can fully focus on giving money to the needy, because smaller better planned options just won't work.

Does anyone know if Manning turns over enough to keep it open after VSU?
It probably doesn't make a profit now, but if VSU was enacted it probably could. Of course I have a feeling many events there would become more expensive for both members and non-members of the union.

Not that I myself particularly agree with the way the Howard government has embarked on things precisely, but its endeavours in the past couple of years has had humanitarian interests. War in Iraq, Tsunami efforts etc.

If you want to say "Oh, why hasnt it signed the Kyoto Protocol?" - it doesnt need to, it already has one of the lowest emissions for a highly industrialised country.

This is just to take a random example. Im sure you can argue many points against, In fact I am sure you will, but this is just some of my observations.

I myself am quite open, but when you say that older people are 'scared' into voting liberal as they get older I find that misleading...the same could be assumed for younger citizens voting labor because it caters more to student welfare etc.

Besides, if you examine Labor and Liberal, they are both basically right wing, just one has a left slant. Sometimes it is very difficult to distinguish the differences, because they both hold similar stances on many areas.

EDIT: I myself like Socialism the most idealistically, but in practice I am conservative.

Per capita we have high emissions.
Kyoto is an expensive program that at most would delay global warming by 6 years (if every country was to conform to the rules exactly starting the date it was enacted).
There are better ways to spend our money..

I see asquithian, so it's ok for museums to hang paintings in over-the-top frames, in huge buildings that are much larger than what is needed in most cases but it isn't ok for someone to buy themselves a big house?

And of course you wouldn't oppose this either, would you my 'socialist' friend?:)

I consider myself to have taken elements of both sides to create my cynical view of the world:p
