remember that only horizontal asymptotes can be crossed (limit of a function as x approaches + or - infinity) whilst vertical tangents cannot be crossed (x values for which the function is not defined, i.e. division by zero)

that is a very important thing you will have to remember.

an asymptote is merely a line that a curve does not touch.

For this curve, y=0 is an asymptote beyond the points of inflexion.

ie. if the pts of inflexion at x=a and x=-a (which they would be, as the function is even), then y=0 is an asymptote for x<-a and x>a.

Also, just another tip: finding out whether the curve is odd/even really helps.
