hi, I'm only in year 11 but i want to know how I can improve to get my desired ATAR of 97.

school rank: top 10

advanced english
rank: 84/125 (yeah i know, shit)
mark: 69/100

english extension (dropping this shit next year)
rank: 62/77
mark: 34/50

maths
rank: 37/117
mark: 88/100

maths extension
rank: 37/97
mark: 40/50

economics
rank: 5/38
mark: 92/100

business studies
rank: 11/24
mark: 89/100

also, I do a tvet course financial services.
no rank for this
marks range from 90-95%
I was wondering whether I should drop or keep this, because it's really risky in that the hsc exam is worth 100% :/ Also, my classes are in the evening and sometimes I get really tired and fall asleep (because I have the worst luck and have no free periods on the days when I go to tafe, however, on other school days I only have like 3 hours of school fml). I do sort of like the subject though, and might wait to see if my timetable is better next year.

I know I can do a lot better than this though because I was balancing 8 hours of extracurricular per week, and my study habits have improved since half yearlies. I'm pretty hopeless at english, but was wondering if it's really important to improve in this subject? Would it be enough to improve my other subjects? I'm also still not sure whether to consider taking up maths extension 2. Thoughts?

any replies would be appreciated xx

Okay, so if you do drop ext 1 english and financial services, then you'e on 9 units. So that would mean you have to pick up 4U maths, so you have to think about that....

Now, for the atar estimate, I will give you my estimate, but keep in mind, HSC course is very different to prelim course in like pretty much every subject. Anyway, for your estimate, I'd say you're looking at around 97. but I'm a relative noob at atar estimates, so try to get some more. So yeah but......

You really need to work on English. Its going to count no matter what. And even if you do well in subjects such as Eco and Business, English will really drag down your atar. So I suggest getting a private tutor ('shop' around), improving your skills in English by staying up to date and constantly getting feedback from your teacher and tutor, and you know going to seminars etc.

Pretty much, imo, it wouldn't be enough to just improve in the other subjects. Improve all around and your atar will improve all around. Also, focus some of your time on improving maths, so a) you get better marks and b) then you could also do well in 4u, where scaling helps etc.

Just think about all that and good luck! :)

english is critical - it counts for 2 units of your ATAR so if you really do want to do well, you'll need to ensure english is about a band 6

thanks for all your input :) my parents won't let me get tutoring because they don't care about my marks and think it's a waste of money:/ i'll have to have a good think about where I want to go in terms of marks and everything...

yeah i get it, i'm just a little frustrated with this subject because it's so hard to get good marks and i find it really overwhelming. i also feel that when i study for english it's a waste of time because I could be spending it on other subjects.. sigh... i just don't know what to do

Never give up on english - it may be difficult but you can definitely improve by heaps seeing as you're only in year 11 at a top 10 school.

I was in a similar position to you back in year 11 and i managed to pull (with hard work ofc) from rank 70s at a top 30 school to rank 4 come year 12. It's definitely not too late to try.
