I'm planning on coming to Sydney next year to do one of these courses...

I want to teach English and French after school, so you'd think that'd mean I'd do b arts/b edu

BUT

I like the sound of B arts (languages), as you get to really specialise in your language as well as in other arts areas (ie english), and they give you 5000 bucks to do a foreign exchange which would increase my employability (it's good to have lived in france if you want to teach it i figure!) aside from being massively cool.

Is there anyway I can do the language degree but still come out qualified to teach English and French? Like can I take the compulsary education classes as part of my degree? Does that mean i'll be at uni for 6 years? (the language one is 4)

Thanks everyone!

Well, there is an alternate way to quality as a teacher through the BTeach/MTeach course. That takes 1 1/2 years or 2 years respectively beyond your degree, however.

So a total of 6 years to become a fully qualified teacher, only one year past the normal time to complete a combined education degree programme.

It sounds like it's worth it - especially as for languages having lived/studied in the country really improves your skills. I studied for 3 months in Greece and it was amazing how much my Greek improved in that time. Also, six years isn't really a long time in the scheme of things.

Conclusion: Study BA(lang) and then go MTeach, and win at life.

edit: Feel free to PM me with further questions about course structure/etc. I can grab the requisite links to you.

thanks for the speedy reply, that's all really helpful. I like winning at life.

Quick question though, what's the difference between Bteach and Mteach?

You know Isaiah Berlin . Hmm, The BTeach and MTeach differ I believe in extent of 'equivalent' teacher training. I believe that the MTeach qualifies you as a full status teacher which has implications for pay etc.

Let me seek this out for ye:

Exiting with the BTeach
Candidates can exit the course with a Bachelor of Teaching after three semesters, ready to seek employment midyear in time for the start of school term three with 4 year trained teacher status.

Continuing with the MTeach
Candidates who satisfy all requirements for the Bachelor of Teaching may then be enrolled in the fourth semester to complete the Master of Teaching, ready to seek employment in time for the start of school term four with 5 year trained teacher status.

So it's a one semester difference.

Important also: The BTeach component is approximately $2000 per semester (for 3 semesters). This fee is HECS-liable for local candidates. The MTeach component (4th semester) has no fees for local students.

So that's pretty neat. Free semester = more pay.

Awesome. I like the sound of more pay :)

Oh well, guess it just rests now on whether I get the UAI for B arts (languages0. I think I can do it.

When did your obsession with Isaiah Berlin begin? I found the hedgehog and the fox when I was researching my ext hist project evaluating Tolstoy's view of history, and i was like SCORE +1000

Even if you don't do a straight BA so you can study more subjects.

Umm, my obsession with Isaiah Berlin started when I found an anthology of his essays at home which belonged to my dad.
