No it's more involved than that. Your internal marks basically mean nothing - it is your rank that matters. Hypothetically, say your average mark of all internal assessments for english was 95, but that mark ended up ranking you last in your grade. Then your internal mark would be something significantly lower than 95, depending on how well your school performs in the external HSC exam for that subject. That's how they compare different schools with different standards.
Not true. Marks and ranks are both important.

Yes, they certainly are important - because they are what determine your ranking. But not in the sense that they contribute to the process of calculating the HSC mark. They don't look at what you scored out of 30 for some assessment - only the resultant RANK that mark amongst other marks gave you in the end.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. Don't marks matter in the sense they determine the outliers of the class?

And if I were to go to a school ranked in the 400's but rank first internally for every subject and the cohorts marks are putrid, will I be affected?

If you get 80 internally, and it gets moderated to 80, you'll need 100 in your own HSC exam to get 90 as an HSC mark.

Your internal mark does not matter, it gets moderated based on the highest HSC mark in your cohort, and your rank and the relative positions of the people above and below you. Your "80" gets pushed up or down with the gaps between people in your cohort constant - with the pushing depending on how the top person went.

That moderated mark is averaged with your own performance in the HSC exam.

In a nutshell:

(Moderated mark based on your rank and best cohort performer + Own HSC exam mark) / 2 = Reported HSC mark
Yusss.

Marks are really important - the mark gaps play an important role in determining the value of marks that are going to be given to a certain cohort in a certain school based on the internal mark gaps and the performance in the HSC exams.

The moderated marks get given out based on the order of the internal marks ie ranks - see above.

Marks matter, more specifically mark gaps matter.

If you're first internally for everything, the ATAR you get will be entirely up to you. You won't be dragged down by your cohort :)

question.

if i come third internally, does this mean i get the third best mark in the hsc of my cohort?
or do i get my mark?

This has been bugging me.

Half your HSC mark will be the 3rd best mark in the HSC of your cohort
Half will be your actual HSC mark

Then they like average it, basically.

Because the cohort itself is stupid. That's why the cohort doesn't get that many Band 6's in comparison to Advanced.

All the dropouts are doing Standard. Does that make sense to you? English Standard does not have a "set amount" of Band 6's per year, and nor is the subject capped for that matter either.

More likely than you getting a band 6 in advanced with all that competition from the strong cohort.

umm lol okay.. but you know nothing about my capabilities in English advanced. So to predict any possibilities here would be fruitless and pathetic on your behalf

What people are trying to say is that your depth and accuracy of analysis has to be :spzz: to get a band 6 in Standard. They usually don't provide the deepest of prescribed texts as to compensate for, like you said Misyndo, the dropouts. Advanced curriculum texts are usually 'meatier' and can draw so much more from to get the marks out of it.

I've been told endlessly for the last 2 years that "it's easier to get a band 6 in Advanced than Standard". Also scaling and what not, ye.

alright first of all asswipe... i know b00m personally, and "nom nom nom"???.. how old are you? 10?

and second of all.. he is actually in a position to get a band 6 in adv english with his current rank. and if u actually knew the facts properly or anything about the difference between advanced and standard, you'll know that only around 15 (if that) people in the state get a band 6 in standard..

so unless you're one of those 15. good luck to you.
